Chapter 17 - The Divorce

The final divorce hearing was almost disappointingly simple.
No shouting.
No surprise witness.
No Savannah.
No Ethan.
No Margaret.
Just lawyers.
Documents.
A judge.
The eighteen-million-dollar villa remained under Claire’s Whitmore entity.
Adrian made no claim.
Claire retained the sale proceeds from the original transfer because the property had legally belonged to her.
She waived several potential claims against Adrian’s separate property.
He agreed to child support calculated normally.
Not extravagantly.
Claire did not need his money.
Noah deserved parental responsibility anyway.
Then came the final question.
“Is the marriage irretrievably broken?”
Claire answered.
“Yes.”
The judge looked at Adrian.
“Yes.”
Adrian’s voice was quiet.
The order was entered.
Claire expected a wave of emotion.
Instead, she felt calm.
Outside, Adrian stood beside her.
“You really planned the house thing for weeks?”
Claire smiled.
“Months.”
He almost laughed.
“Selling it to yourself was brutal.”
“You told me everything I had was yours.”
“I remember.”
“I wanted one practical demonstration.”
“Effective.”
They stood in silence.
Then Adrian said.
“I was cruel to you.”
Claire looked at him.
“Yes.”
“I thought because I never hit you, I was a good husband.”
Her expression changed.
Adrian continued.
“I understand now that humiliation can be violence too.”
Claire appreciated the sentence.
She did not reward it.
Growth belonged to him.
Not as currency for reconciliation.
He asked.
“Do you ever think we could have fixed it?”
Claire answered honestly.
“If you had changed before I stopped wanting you to.”
Adrian looked down.
“That’s fair.”
Then Noah came running from Benjamin’s car.
“Daddy!”
Adrian crouched.
Noah jumped into his arms.
Claire watched.
No jealousy.
No fear.

This was the future she wanted.
A son who could love both parents without being recruited into either one’s grievance.
