Chapter 12 - Margaret Vale

Margaret arrived at the next board hearing with two attorneys.

She denied conspiring with Ethan.

Then investigators produced messages.

One from Margaret.

Claire turns thirty-two on the 14th.

Whatever you’re doing must happen before she realizes what Eleanor left her.

Another.

Adrian is distracted by Savannah.

Use that.

And.

Richard will choose the company over his son if the numbers look bad enough.

Margaret stared at the screen.

Richard looked at his wife.

“Why?”

Margaret’s composure cracked.

“You were giving everything away.”

“To whom?”

“To Claire.”

Richard frowned.

“I was protecting the company.”

“No.”

Margaret stood.

“You were replacing our son with her.”

Claire stared.

There it was.

Jealousy.

Not financial genius.

Not strategy.

A mother terrified that the quiet daughter-in-law might become more important than Adrian.

Margaret continued.

“Eleanor designed everything to humiliate us.”

“Her trust.”

“The shares.”

“That ridiculous coercion clause.”

Claire answered.

“My mother designed those things for me.”

“You made them about you.”

Margaret looked at her.

“She hated us.”

Claire nodded.

“She had reasons.”

The board investigation revealed Margaret had authorized Ethan to access dormant shareholder information.

That helped him contact private investors before Claire did.

He bought several debt positions with Helen’s money.

Margaret expected a temporary crisis.

She thought Adrian would be humbled.

Richard would shift shares toward her.

Then she could restore control.

Instead, Ethan planned to take the company.

Margaret had lost control of her own conspiracy.

Richard looked devastated.

“You risked thirty thousand employees because you were angry at Claire?”

Margaret whispered.

“I was protecting Adrian.”

Adrian spoke from across the room.

“No.”

Everyone turned.

He looked at his mother.

“You were protecting the version of me that needed you.”

Margaret stared.

Adrian continued.

“You liked that I thought every problem could be fixed by calling you.”

“That’s not love.”

Claire heard the words.

Possession for love.

The pattern existed on both sides of Adrian’s life.

He had learned it somewhere.

The board removed Margaret from all advisory authority.

Her ten percent remained hers.

Her voting rights were temporarily suspended pending litigation.

For the first time, the Vale family matriarch left a room without anyone following her.
