Chapter 3 - Washington

Claire watched Noah sleep beside her on a narrow sofa in a Georgetown townhouse.
He had refused the guest bedroom.
He wanted to stay where he could see her.
His little hand still held the sleeve of her sweater.
Claire understood.
For four years, Noah had lived in a house where Adrian came and went according to his own schedule.
Sometimes affectionate.
Sometimes distracted.
Often absent.
Noah had learned to ask.
“Is Daddy sleeping here tonight?”
Claire had stopped answering with confidence.
Now there was one promise she could give him.
“I’m here.”
Benjamin Hart entered carrying coffee.
At seventy-one, he still wore suits like court was always five minutes away.
“Vale’s attorneys called.”
Claire did not look surprised.
“What did they want?”
“Your location.”
“No.”
“I told them no.”
“Thank you.”
Benjamin sat.
“They also threatened emergency custody.”
Claire looked toward Noah.
“On what grounds?”
“Parental interference.”
She laughed softly.
“Adrian didn’t know what school Noah attended until last month.”
Benjamin almost smiled.
“You have documentation.”
“Everything.”
Claire had spent eleven months preparing.
Not because she expected revenge.
Because her mother had taught her something before she died.
Never walk into a powerful family’s courtroom with only the truth.
Bring the paperwork too.
At midnight on Claire’s thirty-second birthday, control of the Whitmore Technology Trust transferred to her.
Forty-six million liquid.
Another twenty-one million in long-term holdings.
Shares in three private technology firms.
And rights attached to several old Vale Industries loans Claire’s mother had quietly purchased years earlier.
That last detail mattered most.
It meant Claire had access to Vale family shares Adrian never knew existed outside his immediate relatives.
Benjamin opened another folder.
“Twenty-nine percent cleared.”
Claire nodded.
“How much does Richard control?”
“Thirty-one.”
“Margaret?”
“Ten.”
“Adrian?”
“Twenty-two directly.”
“The rest?”
“Scattered.”
Claire thought.
With Richard, she could block Adrian.
If Richard supported her.
She did not assume he would.
Benjamin watched her.
“Still planning to attend the emergency board meeting?”
“Yes.”
“Adrian will be there.”
“I know.”
“You could vote by proxy.”
Claire looked at Noah.
“That’s what everyone expects.”
“What do you want?”
“To stop disappearing.”
Benjamin nodded.
That was the real change.
Claire had spent years making herself smaller.
She stopped inviting friends Adrian disliked.
Stopped discussing technology because he called it boring.
Stopped attending Whitmore board events because Adrian mocked inherited money.
She had allowed him to believe her mother left almost nothing.
At first, that was privacy.
Later, it became protection.
Then Savannah entered the picture.
Adrian began telling Claire she should be grateful.
Grateful for the villa.
The cars.
The social position.
As though Claire had arrived in his life empty-handed.
She let him believe it.
Because by then, she had begun planning.
Noah stirred.
“Mommy?”
Claire immediately turned.
“I’m here.”
He opened his eyes.
“Are we going home?”
Claire paused.
Then answered carefully.
“We’re going to make a new home.”
Noah thought about it.
“Does Daddy come?”
Claire’s chest hurt.
“I don’t know yet.”
He looked sad.
She pulled him closer.
“I know you love him.”
Noah nodded.
“You’re allowed to.”
That mattered.
Claire was leaving Adrian.
Noah did not have to.
Then Benjamin’s phone rang.
He answered.
Listened.
His expression changed.
“What?”
Claire asked.
He ended the call.
“Savannah Reed is on a flight to Washington.”
Claire stared.
“Why?”
May you like
Benjamin looked grim.
“She asked to meet you.”
