Chapter 7 - THE DOCTOR AT THE WINDOW

I told Lily to lock herself in the bathroom.
My sister activated the home alarm.
Police reached the house within six minutes.
Dr. Bell disappeared before they arrived.
He left a package beneath the living room window.
Inside was a second ultrasound and a handwritten note.
THE GIRL SAW TOO MUCH.
The new image showed Elena’s baby at thirty-two weeks.
A DNA code had been written across the bottom.
Marcus sent it to an independent geneticist.
The code indicated the embryo belonged to Elena.
The paternal sample did not match Alexander.
It matched a close male relative.
Julian was the biological father.
Alexander sat silently for several minutes.
He and Elena had created embryos together.
Dr. Bell had replaced Alexander’s genetic material with Julian’s.
Elena had been forced to carry the child of the man who helped imprison her.
The cruelty seemed impossible to comprehend.
Yet Marcus saw another motive.
A child descended from Julian could claim the second trust.
If the child’s guardian also controlled the shares transferred through Alexander’s false pregnancy trust, Cynthia would possess both branches of the company.
The unborn baby was the center of everything.
Alexander wanted to storm the hunting lodge.
Federal agents created a rescue plan.
I provided the old security maps.
The lodge had a main house, a boathouse, and a concealed storm shelter beneath the north wing.
At midnight, teams surrounded Blackwater Lake.
Alexander entered the property carrying copies of the trust documents.
A microphone was hidden inside his jacket.
Cynthia appeared on the porch.
She held a gun.
“You always received everything,” she told him.
“My mother gave your family her life.”
“Your mother was family to us.”
“She was your father’s servant.”
“Where is Elena?”
Cynthia smiled.
“Inside.”
Alexander climbed the steps.
The door closed behind him.
Agents waited for his signal.
It never came.
Then the lodge lights went out.
Gunshots sounded near the lake.
The tactical team moved forward.
Inside the house, they found blood and Alexander’s microphone.
A trapdoor beneath the kitchen stood open.
The tunnel below led toward the boathouse.
A motorboat was already crossing the dark water.
Three figures were aboard.
One was Cynthia.
May you like
One was Alexander.
The third was a heavily pregnant woman.
