Chapter 10 - THE BABY WITHOUT A NAME

Elena gave birth inside the underground chamber.

Dr. Bell delivered the baby while federal medics assisted.

Alexander remained beside her.

He held her hand even when she tried to pull away.

The baby was a boy.

He was small, but he cried immediately.

The sound echoed through the concrete room.

Julian stopped struggling when he heard it.

“My son,” he whispered.

Elena turned her face toward him.

“You will never call him that again.”

Cynthia sat against the wall with blood on her hands.

She stared at the newborn as though the child represented every crime she had committed.

Agents removed Julian first.

Cynthia did not resist.

Alexander wrapped the baby in his jacket.

Elena looked at him for the first time without fear.

“You believed I was dead.”

“I did.”

“You married her.”

“I thought you asked Vanessa to take care of me.”

“I never asked that.”

“I know.”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Do you?”

Alexander had no answer.

He had been deceived, but Elena had endured years of captivity.

His grief could not equal her suffering.

Outside the station, ambulances waited.

Elena and the baby were taken to a hospital under federal protection.

Alexander rode in another ambulance because of the wound on his shoulder.

Dr. Bell was arrested.

Before being placed in a police vehicle, he asked to speak with Marcus.

“There is another file,” he said.

“What file?”

“The original fertility record.”

“What does it show?”

Dr. Bell looked toward Elena’s ambulance.

“Julian is not the child’s father.”

“You altered the DNA code.”

“I altered many things.”

“Then who is the father?”

Dr. Bell leaned closer.

“The embryo was created before Elena disappeared.”

Marcus stared at him.

“With Alexander’s genetic material?”

“Yes.”

“Why did you tell Cynthia it belonged to Julian?”

“Because Julian planned to kill the baby after gaining control of the trust.”

Dr. Bell looked toward the underground station.

“I thought the only way to keep the child alive was to make Julian believe the baby was his.”
