Chapter 15 - MARGARET’S VOICE
The key opened a safe-deposit box in Cynthia’s name.
Inside was an old cassette tape and the missing final page of Margaret’s statement.
The tape had been recorded the night she died.
Margaret described discovering Julian’s theft.
She also revealed that Richard had been moving company money into private accounts.
Both men feared exposure.
Margaret planned to give the evidence to Alexander’s mother the following morning.
Near the end of the recording, a door opened.
Julian’s voice demanded the tape.
Margaret refused.
A struggle followed.
Richard entered seconds later.
Margaret screamed.
Then the recording ended.
The written statement explained why Richard protected Julian.
Julian had evidence of Richard’s financial crimes.
Each man controlled the other.
Margaret’s death bound them together.
Cynthia had found the tape when she was seventeen.
Richard caught her listening to it.
He took the recording and told her Julian had died.
Years later, Julian contacted her and claimed Richard murdered Margaret.
He gave Cynthia a copy of part of the tape but removed his own voice.
Cynthia spent her life serving a lie created by the man who killed her mother.
Elena did not comfort her.
“You learned the truth before Blackwater Lake,” Elena said.
“Yes.”
“And you still drugged me.”
“Yes.”
“You still planned to take my child.”
Cynthia lowered her head.
“Yes.”
“Then your pain explains you.”
“It does not excuse you.”
Cynthia began crying.
For the first time, she looked less like a mastermind and more like someone who had allowed grief to become cruelty.
She agreed to testify against Julian and Richard.
In return, prosecutors offered no promise except consideration.
Vanessa also accepted responsibility.
She pleaded guilty to fraud, conspiracy, and unlawful imprisonment.
She asked to apologize to Elena.
Elena refused the meeting.
“An apology should not become another burden placed on the victim,” she told Marcus.
The criminal cases moved toward trial.
Then a nurse discovered an empty medication vial beside Noah’s hospital bassinet.
The label indicated a drug that could stop an infant’s heart.
Security footage showed a woman in hospital clothing entering the neonatal unit.
She was not Cynthia.
She was not Vanessa.
