Chapter 12 - RICHARD’S CONFESSION
Police located Richard and Vanessa at a private railway station.
They were preparing to cross the border.
Richard surrendered.
Vanessa attempted to run and was arrested near the platform.
Inside Richard’s suitcase were the original trust, Margaret’s letter, and twenty million dollars in bearer bonds.
Richard admitted he had known Julian survived the boating accident.
He helped his younger son assume a new identity to avoid scandal.
In exchange, Julian promised to remain away from the family.
Richard also knew Julian killed Margaret.
He paid investigators to call the death accidental.
“Why protect him?” Alexander demanded during the recorded interview.
“Because he was my son.”
“So was I.”
“You were the son who could survive the truth.”
Alexander laughed bitterly.
“That was never your decision to make.”
Richard admitted that Cynthia witnessed part of the balcony argument.
She saw Richard standing near Margaret’s body.
She did not see Julian push her.
Richard allowed Cynthia to believe he was responsible because exposing Julian would have destroyed the company.
That lie created everything that followed.
Vanessa revealed another secret.
She had not escaped police custody willingly.
Cynthia threatened to kill her unless she helped retrieve Elena.
Vanessa still admitted participating in the false pregnancy and trust fraud.
She had worn the artificial belly for eight months.
She had attended medical appointments where Dr. Bell played recordings of another baby’s heartbeat.
She had accepted gifts and company shares.
She had planned to stage a stillbirth after Cynthia secured the guardianship clause.
“What would happen to the real baby?” Marcus asked.
Vanessa covered her face.
“Julian said there would be no real baby after the papers were signed.”
Elena listened to the confession from her hospital room.
She held her newborn son against her chest.
Alexander stood near the door.
“I want to name him Noah,” she said.
Alexander’s eyes filled with tears.
“Because he survived the flood?”
“Because he survived people who believed they could decide whether he deserved to live.”
She looked at Alexander.
“You may sign the birth certificate.”
