Chapter 1 - THE NAME ON THE ULTRASOUND

Alexander Whitmore stared at the ultrasound as if the ballroom had vanished around him.

The name printed across the top was unmistakable.

ELENA WHITMORE.

His first wife.

The woman whose car had plunged from a mountain road three years earlier.

The woman whose body had never been recovered.

The woman Vanessa claimed to have replaced in his heart.

Alexander’s fingers began to shake.

“This image was taken six months ago,” the family attorney, Marcus Hale, said.

“That is impossible,” Alexander whispered.

Vanessa stood beneath the chandeliers with both hands protecting the false belly beneath her gown.

Cynthia moved closer to her sister.

Neither woman looked surprised by Elena’s name.

That frightened me more than anything else.

My daughter Lily remained beside me.

She was only eight, but she understood that she had uncovered something dangerous.

I placed one arm around her shoulders.

The hotel physician, Dr. Howard Bell, attempted to slip through a side exit.

Two security guards blocked his path.

Alexander turned toward him.

“You signed Vanessa’s pregnancy records.”

Dr. Bell said nothing.

“You showed me scans,” Alexander continued.

“You told me my child was healthy.”

The doctor looked toward Vanessa.

That single glance gave him away.

Alexander tore the pillow from beneath Vanessa’s dress.

Gasps moved through the ballroom.

The expensive silk gown collapsed around her flat stomach.

“I had no choice,” Vanessa said.

“No choice?” Alexander demanded.

“You forged a pregnancy and convinced me to transfer company shares.”

“It was supposed to protect this family.”

“From what?”

Vanessa’s eyes shifted toward Cynthia.

Cynthia stepped forward.

“From Elena.”

The name silenced the room again.

Alexander looked as though he had been struck.

“My wife is alive?”

Cynthia smiled without warmth.

“She has been alive the entire time.”

Before Alexander could reach her, the ballroom lights went out.

Someone screamed.

Glass shattered near the stage.

I pulled Lily to the floor.

When the emergency lights appeared, Cynthia was gone.

Vanessa remained near the table.

Dr. Bell had disappeared too.

On the floor where he had been standing was a small silver key.

Attached to it was a tag bearing one word.
