Chapter 13 - THE CHILD WHO SAW EVERYTHING
Lily became an unexpected witness in the criminal investigation.
She described seeing Vanessa enter the dressing room wearing the false belly.
She also remembered Cynthia arguing with Dr. Bell.
Cynthia said, “The real mother cannot reach the ninth month.”
Dr. Bell replied, “The drugs are already affecting her heart.”
At the time, Lily believed they were discussing someone else.
Her statement connected Cynthia directly to Elena’s accelerated labor.
I hated that my daughter had heard such things.
Yet she wanted to testify.
“You always say adults should listen when kids tell the truth,” she reminded me.
The prosecutors arranged a private recorded interview instead of putting her immediately in court.
Lily answered every question clearly.
When asked why she noticed the belly, she explained that Vanessa’s shape changed after she entered the dressing room.
“The baby moved from the left side to the middle,” she said.
“Real babies don’t move like pillows.”
Her observation became central evidence.
Meanwhile, Elena began remembering details from the night she disappeared.
Vanessa had invited her to a charity dinner.
Dr. Bell gave her something for a headache.
She woke inside Rosebridge.
Cynthia told her Alexander had died in a car accident.
Later, she was shown a forged newspaper article confirming his death.
Elena spent years believing she was a widow.
When she attempted to escape, Julian threatened to harm Alexander’s elderly mother.
Elena never knew the woman had died years earlier.
Every piece of information she received had been controlled.
After the embryo implantation, Elena overheard nurses discussing Alexander’s marriage to Vanessa.
That was when she realized Alexander was alive.
She began leaving clues.
The hospital wristband beneath the nursery blanket was intentional.
The ultrasound in Cynthia’s garment bag was also intentional.
Elena gave it to a sympathetic nurse who hid it among Cynthia’s belongings.
The nurse disappeared the next day.
Her name was Sophie Grant.
Federal agents searched Rosebridge employment records.
Sophie had been listed as terminated.
Her last phone signal came from a warehouse owned by James Vale.
