Chapter 9 - THE GRAVE OPENS
A court authorized Isabel’s exhumation.
Alejandro hated the decision.
For four years, her grave had been the one peaceful place in his life.
Now Ricardo’s conspiracy had reached even there.
Forensic specialists collected preserved tissue samples.
The results showed abnormal levels of a powerful opioid and a heart medication Isabel had never been prescribed.
Together, they could suppress breathing and cause cardiac failure.
Camila had access to both drugs.
Hospital security footage had been overwritten years earlier.
But payment records remained.
Ricardo transferred five hundred thousand dollars to Camila’s offshore company two days after Isabel died.
The memo read:
CONSULTING COMPLETE.
Camila requested a plea agreement.
She admitted changing Isabel’s medication.
She claimed Ricardo said Alejandro wanted the suffering ended.
She never spoke directly to Alejandro.
She never confirmed consent.
Mónica waited inside a hospital lounge while Camila entered Isabel’s room.
Afterward, Mónica sent Ricardo a message.
The door is open.
The words were not poetic.
They described Alejandro’s life.
Isabel’s death opened the door to his grief.
Mónica stepped through it.
Camila also admitted the current plan.
They intended to portray Valentina as unstable.
Then they would provoke a public incident involving Alejandro.
Ricardo would file for guardianship.
Mónica would support the petition while pretending to choose the child over her husband.
Once Ricardo controlled Valentina’s shares, he would force a board vote removing Alejandro from Torres International.
The company would then purchase the contaminated coastal land through a hidden subsidiary.
The same scheme Isabel had stopped.
Ricardo had spent years rebuilding the crime around her child.
Alejandro stood outside the forensic laboratory.
Rosa joined him.
“I am sorry.”
“You did not do this.”
“I saw Mónica put medicine in Valentina’s juice.”
“I waited two days before hiding the bottle.”
“Why?”
“I was afraid.”
Alejandro looked at her.
“Fear delayed you.”
“It did not make you responsible for their plan.”
He had to believe that for Rosa.
He also had to believe it for himself.
His absence created opportunity.
It did not create Mónica’s choices.
Responsibility required honesty without accepting another person’s guilt.
