Chapter 5 - THE WOMAN BEHIND THE DOOR

Police entered the mansion at seven in the morning.

Mónica opened the bedroom door wearing a white silk robe.

Her attorney stood behind her.

She looked composed.

“Alejandro is having an emotional episode.”

Detective Lucía Mendoza held up a warrant.

“We are searching the property for evidence of child abuse, unlawful medication, fraud, and conspiracy.”

Mónica laughed.

“My husband owns half the city.”

“You think he cannot manufacture evidence?”

“The recordings were created by an independent security system.”

“You disabled one system.”

“You did not find the other.”

For the first time, Mónica lost control.

She looked toward Alejandro.

“You recorded me in my own home?”

“No.”

“The system recorded what happened in Valentina’s home.”

Officers searched the master suite.

They found medication identical to the pills in Valentina’s blood.

They found forged medical reports.

They found copies of Alejandro’s signatures.

Inside Mónica’s locked dressing table, they found Isabel’s original trust documents.

Mónica had removed them from Alejandro’s study.

Her attorney asked to speak privately.

She refused.

“This is a family argument.”

Detective Mendoza answered:

“No.”

“A child was drugged.”

“A family argument does not explain that.”

Rosa stood near the kitchen with two officers.

She looked terrified.

Mónica pointed at her.

“She planted everything.”

Rosa began crying.

Alejandro crossed the room.

“No one will threaten you again.”

Mónica smiled coldly.

“You believe the maid over your wife?”

“I believe the video.”

Rosa gave police a notebook.

She had recorded dates, meals, injuries, and punishments for nearly three weeks.

She also saved pieces of medication she found in Valentina’s drinks.

“I wanted to call you,” she told Alejandro.

“She took my phone.”

“She said her brother could make my family disappear.”

Alejandro looked toward Mónica.

His wife had understood the structure of power perfectly.

She attacked the child.

Silenced the employee.

Manipulated the absent husband.

Paid the doctor.

Disabled the visible cameras.

She believed everyone beneath her was too frightened to become evidence.

Mónica was arrested.

As officers placed her in handcuffs, she leaned toward Alejandro.

“You think this ends with me?”

“Ricardo already filed the petition.”

At nine that morning, an emergency family-court hearing began without Alejandro’s knowledge.

Ricardo was asking the court to remove Valentina from both adults.
