Chapter 6 - THE EMERGENCY HEARING

Ricardo’s petition claimed Valentina faced immediate danger from Alejandro and Mónica.

He described his sister as overwhelmed and Alejandro as violent.

He requested temporary placement of the child with him.

The filing included Camila’s medical reports.

It also included recordings of Valentina saying she feared her father.

The court had not yet seen the hidden-camera footage.

Alejandro entered the courtroom with Detective Mendoza and three attorneys.

Ricardo sat beside Camila.

He wore a dark suit and the concerned expression of a loving uncle.

The judge looked irritated.

“Mr. Torres, why were you not present when the hearing began?”

“Because I was not served.”

Ricardo’s attorney stood.

“Service was delivered to his hotel in Cancún.”

Alejandro had left the hotel a day early.

Someone at the front desk signed for the papers.

That signature belonged to a manager Ricardo had bribed.

The judge ordered the full evidence preserved.

Camila testified first.

She said Valentina displayed symptoms of trauma.

She claimed the child described Alejandro as controlling and frightening.

Alejandro’s attorney played the unedited camera footage.

The tapping signal.

Mónica standing behind Valentina.

Camila repeating questions until the child answered correctly.

The doctor’s face changed.

The judge stopped the video.

“Did you evaluate this child privately?”

Camila hesitated.

“No.”

“Did you administer medication?”

“I recommended support for anxiety.”

“Did you prescribe the sedative found in her blood?”

Camila looked toward Ricardo.

That glance answered before her words did.

“No.”

The prosecutor entered with pharmacy records.

Camila had purchased the medication using the name of another patient.

The judge suspended her medical authority and ordered her detained for questioning.

Ricardo stood.

“This does not make Alejandro safe.”

“His work keeps him away.”

“He allowed this to happen.”

Alejandro did not deny it.

“I failed to see what was happening.”

“I will answer for that with my daughter.”

“But my failure to recognize abuse does not make her abuser a guardian.”

The judge reviewed the hidden recordings.

Then she issued temporary sole custody to Alejandro.

No contact was permitted from Mónica, Ricardo, or Camila.

Ricardo’s face remained calm.

As deputies approached him, he whispered:

“You still don’t know where Isabel’s final letter is.”

Alejandro looked at him.

“What letter?”

May you like

Ricardo smiled.

“The one that says Valentina may not be your daughter.”
