Chapter 1 - THE LOOK IN HER EYES

Alejandro did not look at the broken vase.

He looked at Valentina’s hands.

Thin red lines crossed her fingers where she had tried to pick up the glass.

One shard rested less than an inch from her knee.

Mónica stepped closer with her practiced smile.

“Love, she has been impossible all afternoon.”

Alejandro raised one hand.

“Do not come any closer.”

The sweetness disappeared from Mónica’s face.

Only for a second.

But Alejandro saw it.

He moved carefully across the marble and lifted Valentina away from the broken pieces.

She was frighteningly light.

Her arms wrapped around his neck with desperate strength.

“Daddy,” she whispered.

“I’m here.”

Her entire body shook.

Alejandro carried her toward the sofa.

Mónica followed.

“You are frightening her by making this dramatic.”

Alejandro looked over his daughter’s shoulder.

“She was kneeling in broken glass.”

“She broke an antique vase.”

“She is six.”

“That is old enough to understand consequences.”

Valentina buried her face against his chest.

Alejandro felt something cold inside him.

Not anger yet.

Anger would come later.

This was recognition.

He had returned to a home that no longer felt like his.

A housekeeper appeared near the hallway.

Rosa had worked for the Torres family since Valentina was a baby.

She was holding a tray, but her hands trembled so badly that the glasses rattled.

Alejandro looked at her.

“What happened?”

Rosa opened her mouth.

Mónica turned sharply.

“Rosa was in the laundry room.”

Rosa lowered her eyes.

Alejandro saw fear again.

The same fear in Valentina.

The same fear that had greeted him before Mónica could construct a better explanation.

He took out his phone and called the family physician.

Mónica folded her arms.

“For a few scratches?”

“For whatever else I have not seen.”

He carried Valentina upstairs.

When he entered her bedroom, he stopped.

The curtains were closed despite the afternoon sun.

The shelves where her toys once stood were nearly empty.

Her stuffed bear lay inside a locked glass cabinet.

A tray on the desk contained a bowl of cold oatmeal and a cup of water.

Valentina whispered:

“Can I have dinner today?”

Alejandro closed his eyes.

“When did you last eat?”

“Yesterday.”

Mónica stood in the doorway.

“That is a lie.”

Valentina flinched before the sentence was finished.

Alejandro turned slowly.

“You will remain downstairs.”

“This is my house too.”

“No.”

“It belongs to the Torres family trust.”

“And until I know what happened here, you have no authority over anyone inside it.”

Mónica laughed.

“You have been gone for three weeks.”

“You do not know your own child anymore.”

Valentina tightened her arms around his neck.

Then she whispered the sentence that ended every doubt.

“Daddy, please don’t leave me alone with her again.”
