Chapter 7 - THE PRICE OF SILENCE

The photograph was taken inside a room with no windows.

A stainless-steel rail appeared behind Richard’s wheelchair.

Claire recognized the design.

“It is medical transport equipment.”

Ethan looked at her.

“Another clinic?”

“Or an ambulance.”

The newspaper’s front page provided one clue.

A handwritten circle surrounded an advertisement for the Whitmore Children’s Gala.

The event had been hosted inside an old railway terminal owned by the foundation.

Ethan’s security team searched the property.

They found nothing.

Then Rosa remembered a freight elevator sealed during renovations.

Beneath the terminal was a forgotten medical shelter built during the Cold War.

Ethan, Claire, and detectives entered after midnight.

The underground corridors smelled like rust and damp concrete.

Fresh tire marks crossed the floor.

Someone had used the shelter recently.

A hospital bed stood inside the final room.

Medication hung from a portable pole.

Richard’s fingerprint was found on the rail.

He had been there.

A video camera rested on a chair.

Its memory card contained one recording.

Richard appeared in the same wheelchair.

A masked man stood behind him.

“Ethan,” Richard said.

His speech was slow.

“If you find this, do not trade the company for me.”

“I made the mistake of believing Whitmore Holdings was our family.”

“It is not.”

“People are the family.”

The masked man placed a paper in front of him.

Richard refused to read it.

He looked toward the camera.

“Claire knows where Olivia is.”

The recording ended.

Ethan turned.

“You told me you did not know.”

“I said I did not know where she was now.”

“That is not the same thing.”

“No.”

Claire pressed her fingers against her ribs.

“Olivia contacted me six years ago.”

“She was living under protection in Canada.”

“Protection from whom?”

“Your mother.”

“Why did you not tell me?”

“Olivia said someone inside your office reported every private call.”

“She believed telling you would expose her.”

“Was she right?”

“Your signature is in the ledger.”

Ethan moved closer.

“You keep deciding what truth I can survive.”

“I learned that from your family.”

The sentence struck him silent.

A detective called from the next room.

They had found a bloodstained scarf inside a disposal bin.

Ethan recognized it.

Olivia had worn it in the final photograph from Richard’s archive.

The blood was fresh.

A burner phone lay beneath it.

Only one number had been called.

Claire’s.

Her phone began ringing.

The caller was unknown.

She answered on speaker.

A woman whispered.

“Claire?”

Claire’s face changed.

“Olivia?”

Ethan stopped breathing.

His sister’s voice shook.

“They found me.”

“Where are you?”

“I do not know.”

“I woke inside a van.”

A man shouted in the background.

The call crackled.

Olivia spoke quickly.

“Do not let Ethan trust Rosa.”

Then the line went dead.

May you like

Everyone turned toward the maid.

Rosa slowly stepped backward.
