Chapter 16 - ELEANOR’S FINAL WEAPON

Eleanor entered the interview room wearing a gray detention uniform.
Even without pearls and tailored dresses, she carried herself like the most powerful person present.
Claire sat across from her.
Ethan watched from behind one-way glass with federal investigators.
Eleanor smiled.
“So you finally told him.”
“You knew about Eli.”
“I knew before you left the hospital.”
“You sent someone to threaten me.”
“I sent someone to explain reality.”
“You told me Ethan wanted custody.”
“He would have eventually.”
“You never told him his son existed.”
“I protected Ethan from scandal.”
Claire leaned forward.
“You protected your control.”
Eleanor’s smile faded.
“I have the hospital consent form.”
“You listed the father as unknown.”
“Because I was afraid.”
“You also crossed state lines under a false name.”
“To protect my child from you.”
“A jury may call that kidnapping.”
“No.”
Ethan entered the room.
Eleanor’s eyes sharpened.
“You should not be here.”
“I am Eli’s father.”
“He is a product of deception.”
“He is my son.”
“She stole eight years.”
Ethan looked at Claire.
“No.”
“You stole them.”
For the first time, Eleanor appeared wounded.
“I raised you.”
“You trained me to doubt everyone except you.”
“I gave you the company.”
“You used my signature to steal from children.”
“I kept the Whitmore name alive.”
“You kept yourself powerful.”
Eleanor placed a folder on the table.
Her attorney had prepared a complaint accusing Claire of custodial interference.
The federal prosecutor entered behind Ethan.
He took the folder.
“Mrs. Whitmore, threatening a witness with fabricated charges may affect your bail status.”
Eleanor looked at him.
“The documents are real.”
“So are the recordings of your employee threatening Ms. Mason at the hospital.”
Eleanor’s face changed.
The employee had cooperated after Victor’s arrest.
He admitted Eleanor ordered him to frighten Claire and falsely claim Ethan wanted the baby.
Her final weapon collapsed before she could use it.
Ethan remained standing.
“I came to tell you one thing.”
“What?”
“You will never meet Eli.”
Eleanor’s composure broke.
“He is my grandson.”
“No.”
“He is a child you endangered before he could speak.”
“You do not get another chance.”
She struck the table.
“You cannot erase me.”
“I am not erasing you.”
Ethan’s voice remained calm.
“I will tell him the truth.”
“That is what you fear.”
Eleanor looked toward Claire.
“You will never belong in this family.”
Claire stood.
“I stopped wanting to.”
The federal trial began three months later.
Eleanor, Victor, Charles, and Judge Bell faced conspiracy, kidnapping, fraud, unlawful imprisonment, attempted murder, and obstruction charges.
Rosa agreed to testify.
So did Olivia.
So did the medical staff from Saint Aurelia.
The first witness was Ethan.
The prosecutor asked who had taught him to trust Eleanor.
“My entire family.”
“Who taught you to question her?”
May you like
Ethan looked toward Claire.
“The woman she tried hardest to silence.”
