Chapter 20 - THE FIRST BETRAYAL

Ethan arrived at Claire’s apartment before midnight.
Olivia came with him.
Federal investigators examined the package.
The handwriting did not belong to Richard.
But the pocket watch was authentic.
Inside the back cover, someone had engraved a date.
It was six months before the crash.
Claire remembered a file from the Vermont storage unit.
A security report mentioned another accident involving Richard.
His car brakes failed on a mountain road.
He survived because the vehicle struck a snowbank.
At the time, the event was dismissed as mechanical failure.
Eleanor had not yet begun moving money through Saint Aurelia.
Victor had not yet joined the foundation board.
Someone else had tried to kill Richard first.
The investigators reopened the archive.
A sealed envelope had been cataloged but never examined.
It carried the name Thomas Whitmore.
Richard’s older brother.
Ethan stared at it.
“My uncle died before I was born.”
Olivia shook her head.
“That is what Mother told us.”
The envelope contained military records.
Thomas Whitmore had worked in covert financial intelligence.
He discovered that the original Whitmore fortune came from accounts belonging to political prisoners overseas.
Richard intended to return the money.
Thomas opposed him.
Then Thomas disappeared.
A photograph showed Thomas alive three years after his supposed death.
Beside him stood Victor Lang.
Claire looked toward Ethan.
“Victor was involved before Eleanor.”
A second document revealed that Thomas had a son.
The child was raised under another name.
Charles Denning.
The board member convicted beside Eleanor.
Charles was not merely a corrupt director.
He was Ethan’s cousin.
His motive had not only been money.
He believed Richard stole the Whitmore company from his father.
The federal prosecutor reopened Charles’s cooperation records.
During sentencing negotiations, Charles had mentioned a private archive.
He refused to reveal the location.
The package contained a key card.
A logo appeared in one corner.
Saint Aurelia North.
The clinic that burned had been one of two facilities.
The second clinic stood in upstate New York under another corporate name.
Agents raided it before dawn.
Most rooms were empty.
One patient remained.
An elderly man sat beside the window wearing Richard’s missing signet ring.
He identified himself as Thomas Whitmore.
Ethan and Olivia traveled to the clinic with Claire.
Thomas studied them carefully.
“You look like Richard.”
Ethan stepped closer.
“My father is dead.”
Thomas lowered his eyes.
“I know.”
“Did you try to kill him?”
“Once.”
“Then I spent thirty years trying to stop the people I created.”
Claire placed the pocket watch on the table.
“Did you send this?”
“Yes.”
“Why now?”
“Because Eleanor and Victor were not the beginning.”
Thomas opened a drawer.
Inside were photographs of powerful executives, judges, military officers, and hospital directors.
Several were still active.
“The Whitmore conspiracy was one branch.”
“Saint Aurelia was one location.”
“Your father discovered a network that survives by replacing families with institutions.”
Ethan stared at the files.
“The people convicted were part of something larger.”
“Yes.”
Thomas looked toward Claire.
“Richard trusted you because your father once investigated us.”
Claire froze.
“My father died when I was five.”
“No.”
Thomas slid a photograph across the table.
Claire’s father stood beside Richard and Thomas.
The date was twenty-three years after his supposed death.
“He changed his name.”
“He remained close enough to watch you.”
Claire’s hands began to shake.
“Where is he?”
Thomas looked toward the hallway.
The clinic lights went out.
Emergency alarms began sounding.
A window shattered in the next room.
Federal agents shouted.
Thomas gripped Claire’s wrist.
“They know you are here.”
“Who?”
“The person who sent Eleanor after Richard.”
Gunfire echoed from the main entrance.
Ethan pulled Claire behind the bed.
Olivia reached for the emergency phone.
The line was dead.
Thomas pointed toward a hidden door behind the medical cabinet.
“Take the files.”
“Go.”
Ethan helped him stand.
“You are coming with us.”
Thomas shook his head.
“I began this.”
“You end it.”
The hidden passage opened into a dark service tunnel.
Claire carried the files.
Olivia supported Thomas.
Ethan locked the door behind them.
From the other side, someone entered the room.
A man’s voice spoke calmly.
“Claire Mason.”
“You have spent your entire life looking for the wrong dead man.”
Claire stopped in the tunnel.
She recognized the voice.
It belonged to the federal investigator who had recruited her ten years earlier.
The man who claimed to believe her.
The man who helped build her new identity.
The man who had known every place she lived.
Thomas whispered.
“That is your father.”
May you like
The door handle began turning.
