Chapter 1 - THE BRASS KEY

Ethan’s hand closed around the small brass key.

For one second, he forgot the shouting guests, the crying maid, and the blood appearing at the corner of Claire’s mouth.

He looked from the key to his mother.

Eleanor Whitmore stood beside the grand staircase with one hand pressed against the pearls at her throat.

Her face had lost every trace of color.

“Where did you get that?” she asked.

Claire tried to answer, but pain cut across her ribs.

Her fingers tightened around Ethan’s sleeve.

“Your father gave it to me.”

Ethan stared at her.

“My father has been dead for ten years.”

“No.”

Claire forced air into her lungs.

“He survived the crash.”

A murmur moved through the ballroom.

Eleanor stepped forward.

“She is confused.”

“She fell down a staircase and struck her head.”

The maid who had witnessed the push blocked Eleanor’s path.

“You will stay away from her.”

Eleanor’s eyes narrowed.

“You work for me, Rosa.”

“Not anymore.”

The words were barely louder than a whisper.

Still, they carried across the silent ballroom.

The head of security approached Ethan.

“Police and paramedics are entering the estate.”

Eleanor turned sharply.

“No police.”

Ethan looked at her.

“You pushed Claire in front of two hundred witnesses.”

“She came here threatening this family.”

“She told me my father may be alive.”

“She is lying.”

Claire’s eyes moved toward Eleanor.

“Then why are you afraid of the key?”

Eleanor did not answer.

Paramedics rushed through the main doors.

They placed a brace around Claire’s neck and lifted her onto a stretcher.

Ethan walked beside her.

“Where is my father?”

Claire looked toward the key in his hand.

“Under a different name.”

“Where?”

“I do not know anymore.”

His expression hardened.

“You came here without knowing?”

“I knew three weeks ago.”

“What changed?”

“The clinic was emptied.”

Ethan stopped walking.

“What clinic?”

Claire swallowed against the pain.

“Saint Aurelia.”

Eleanor made a sound behind them.

It was small.

Involuntary.

But Ethan heard it.

He turned toward his mother.

Saint Aurelia was a private medical facility outside Boston.

The Whitmore Foundation had quietly purchased it nine years earlier.

Eleanor had personally approved the acquisition.

The police entered the ballroom.

An officer approached Claire.

“Ma’am, did someone push you?”

Before Claire could answer, Eleanor spoke.

“She is an intruder.”

“She assaulted me.”

“She is also wanted for stealing from this family.”

Ethan looked at Claire.

Ten years earlier, she had disappeared after three million dollars vanished from the Whitmore Foundation.

The evidence had carried her signature.

He had believed she was guilty.

Claire met his eyes.

“I never stole that money.”

A police officer placed Eleanor’s hands behind her back.

Eleanor looked at Ethan as the handcuffs closed.

“If you believe her, you will destroy everything your father built.”

Claire’s stretcher moved toward the doors.

Then Rosa hurried after them.

She held a folded piece of paper taken from beneath the staircase.

“It fell from Mrs. Whitmore’s purse.”

Ethan opened it.

The document was a transfer order from Saint Aurelia Clinic.

The patient’s name was listed as John Mercer.

The photograph beside the name showed Ethan’s father.
