Chapter 13 - RICHARD’S TESTIMONY

Richard looked smaller beneath the hospital blankets.
Machines supported his breathing.
Ethan stood on one side of the bed.
Claire stood on the other.
Olivia remained near the door.
Richard looked at all three of them.
“I failed you.”
Ethan took his hand.
“You survived.”
“That is not the same as living.”
Richard explained the final months before the crash.
Eleanor and Victor had been moving charity money through hospital construction contracts.
Charles Denning created shell companies.
Judge Bell blocked investigations.
Richard planned to expose them at a board meeting.
Eleanor learned of the plan.
She began placing medication in Ethan’s drinks.
The drug caused confusion and memory loss.
She used his executive account while he was impaired.
Then she recorded him signing blank authorizations.
“Why use me?” Ethan asked.
“To make you the final shield.”
“If the truth emerged, the evidence would point to you.”
Ethan looked toward Claire.
Her suspicion had been justified.
That did not make it hurt less.
Richard continued.
“The crash was meant to kill me.”
“I survived.”
“Victor’s men took me from the hospital before police identified me.”
“They told Eleanor I could still sign.”
“So she kept you alive,” Olivia whispered.
“For my hands.”
“For my passwords.”
“For my face.”
Richard’s eyes filled with tears.
“She came every month.”
“She told me my children believed I was dead.”
“She showed me Ethan running the company.”
“She showed me Olivia’s funeral.”
He looked at Claire.
“Then Claire found me.”
“How?” Ethan asked.
“A payment error,” Claire said.
“A clinic vendor used an old tax number connected to Whitmore Holdings.”
“I followed it.”
Richard squeezed her hand weakly.
“She believed me when nobody else knew I existed.”
Claire looked down.
Richard told Ethan that the Vermont facility contained original biometric records and a mechanical override for Vault 427.
Inside the vault was the legal document that could remove every corrupt board member.
There was also a complete recording of Eleanor planning the crash.
“Why did you not tell investigators earlier?” Ethan asked.
Richard’s face tightened.
“I did not know which investigators belonged to Victor.”
Ethan thought of Judge Bell.
The board.
The hospital.
The corruption had surrounded them.
Richard’s monitor began to change.
The nurse moved closer.
He lifted one finger.
“One more thing.”
He looked at Ethan.
“Claire did not return only because of the case.”
Claire’s eyes filled.
“Richard.”
“You both lost ten years because of my wife.”
“Do not give her the years that remain.”
The monitor alarmed.
Doctors ordered everyone out.
Ethan stood behind the glass while they worked.
Claire beside him.
Olivia held his arm.
At 2:16 in the morning, Richard Whitmore’s heart stopped.
This time, no one brought it back.
Ethan lowered his head.
Claire reached for him.
He did not pull away.
Across the corridor, a television showed Eleanor entering federal court.

She smiled at reporters.
She had not yet learned that her husband was dead.
