Chapter 12 - CLAIRE’S SECOND PROMISE

Ethan stared at Claire.

“What did he mean?”

Doctors prepared Richard for emergency treatment.

He could not explain further.

Eleanor was taken away in handcuffs.

Victor, Charles, and Judge Bell remained in federal custody.

Still, Claire looked afraid.

Not of them.

Of Ethan’s question.

Olivia touched Claire’s arm.

“Tell him.”

Claire sat beside the dark hospital window.

“After I left Boston, I changed my name.”

“I worked for a forensic accounting unit attached to the Justice Department.”

Ethan’s expression hardened.

“You became a federal investigator.”

“Consultant.”

“You returned as part of an investigation.”

“At first.”

“And the gala?”

“I was ordered only to observe.”

“Then why confront my mother?”

“Because I learned Richard had been moved.”

“I believed the key could force Eleanor to reveal where.”

“You used me.”

Claire accepted the accusation.

“Yes.”

Olivia shook her head.

“She came back to save Father.”

“She came back without telling me anything.”

Claire looked at Ethan.

“I was not allowed to tell you.”

“Because I was a suspect?”

“Because your authorization appeared on the transfers.”

He stepped away.

The evidence clearing him had not yet been confirmed.

To the federal team, Ethan could still be part of the conspiracy.

Claire continued.

“Richard gave me the key eight months ago.”

“He also gave me access to a hidden trust.”

“What trust?”

“The Whitmore Restitution Fund.”

“Money recovered from offshore accounts.”

“How much?”

“Four hundred million dollars.”

Ethan stared at her.

“My father gave you control?”

“Temporarily.”

“Until you proved whether Ethan was involved,” Olivia said.

Claire closed her eyes.

Richard had made her promise to protect the money from every Whitmore.

Including Ethan.

The hospital president entered.

Richard was being stabilized for surgery.

They needed a family representative to sign consent.

Ethan signed immediately.

After the president left, Claire placed a small identification card on the table.

Her photograph appeared beside the name Claire Mason Reed.

Federal Financial Crimes Consultant.

Ethan looked at it.

“Did any part of your return involve me?”

“Yes.”

“What part?”

“The part I was most afraid of.”

He waited.

“I needed to know whether I still believed you could choose the truth.”

“And?”

Claire’s voice weakened.

“I do not know yet.”

A federal agent entered carrying the broken key.

A technician had examined both pieces.

The metal contained an internal memory strip.

When connected to a reader, it revealed a sequence of coordinates.

They led to a storage facility in Vermont.

Richard’s second route into Vault 427 was hidden there.

The agent also recovered another file.

An audio message recorded the night before Richard’s crash.

Ethan played it.

Richard’s voice filled the room.

“Claire, if Ethan signs against me, do not assume he understands what he is doing.”

“Eleanor has been medicating him for months.”

Ethan’s face changed.

He remembered headaches.

Lost hours.

Pills his mother called vitamins.

Claire stared at him.

“You may not have authorized the five-million-dollar transfer while conscious.”

A nurse hurried from Richard’s surgical room.

“Mr. Whitmore.”

May you like

“Your father is asking for both of you.”

“Now.”
