Chapter 9 - THE HOUSE WE LEFT

We left our home that night.
Not because Eleanor had legal authority.
Because she knew every gate, alarm, employee, and blind spot.
Samuel Ruiz arranged a secure apartment through an independent victim-support network.
It had two bedrooms, plain furniture, and windows overlooking a parking garage.
Lily asked whether we had become poor.
“No.”
“Then why are we here?”
“Because expensive houses are not always safer.”
She accepted the answer more easily than most adults would.
I placed Daniel’s photograph beside her bed.
She asked whether Julian killed him.
The question stopped me.
“We don’t know everything yet.”
“Did Grandma help?”
“The police are investigating.”
“Does Grandma love me?”
I sat beside her.
“I think she feels something she calls love.”
“But love has to care whether you are safe.”
Lily looked toward the doll inside the evidence bag.
“Is she mad because I told?”
“She is mad because the truth did not obey her.”
The next morning, news helicopters hovered near our old house.
Julian gave an interview from the steps of Hart Manor.
He wore a medical brace around his chest.
Doctors found no serious injury.
The brace looked dramatic.
He claimed I attacked him because he confronted Lily’s theft.
He said grief had made me irrational.
He promised to protect his niece.
Then a journalist asked why his fingerprints were inside the brooch compartment.
Julian ended the interview.
Ava Reed, the gala assistant, contacted Naomi.
She had downloaded a backup of the livestream system before the company removed her access.
A side-hallway camera showed Julian entering the cloakroom.
The image was partially blocked by floral decorations.
It showed him holding Lily’s jacket.
Then Cole Brennan, the private security contractor, disabled the camera.
A reflection inside a mirrored wall revealed more.
Julian opened the brooch.
He removed something.
Then he cut the jacket lining and placed the brooch inside.
The footage was not perfect.
It was enough.
Ava had saved it because Daniel once told her:
“Backups are what honest people need when powerful people own the original.”
The foundation fired Ava for violating data policy.
She released a statement.
“I preserved evidence of a child being framed.”
“If that violates policy, the policy deserves investigation.”
Public opinion shifted.
Not entirely.
Some people said I had manipulated a young employee.
Others said the video could be edited.
Julian’s attorneys attacked Ava’s credibility.

Then she revealed something none of us expected.
She had seen Eleanor in the cloakroom too.
