Chapter 13 - JULIAN’S LAST BARGAIN

Julian disappeared before federal agents reached Hart Manor.
His passport remained in the family safe.
His private aircraft stayed grounded.
He left through a service tunnel beneath the estate.
Daniel had shown me that tunnel years earlier.
He called it one of Eleanor’s dramatic security features.
Investigators believed Julian planned to leave by boat.
Then Lily’s school reported an attempted pickup.
A man using a false identification claimed I had been hospitalized.
The school refused.
Every authorized pickup required a private code established after the custody case.
The man ran.
Security footage identified Cole’s former associate.
His phone contained messages from Julian.
Need the child.
Evelyn will trade the archive.
My entire body turned cold.
Julian believed I valued evidence more than Lily.
He had never understood me.
He understood leverage.
That was different.
Police moved Lily to a protected location.
I wanted to remain beside her.
Officer Brooks asked me to help contact Julian.
He would speak only with me.
The call came at midnight.
“Tell them to release my accounts.”
“Where are you?”
“You destroyed everything.”
“You killed Daniel.”
“I did not mean for the car to go over the edge.”
The admission was recorded.
“You cut the brakes.”
“I wanted him frightened.”
“You left him trapped.”
“Patrick should have pulled him out.”
“Patrick saved himself.”
Julian began breathing harder.
“Give me the card.”
“The police have copies.”
“I want the original.”
“Why?”
“Because Mother says ownership matters.”
Even while fleeing, he still carried Eleanor’s rules.
“If I destroy the original, the family can call everything manipulated.”
“The recordings exist in multiple systems.”
“You are lying.”
“No.”
“Daniel believed in backups.”
Julian became silent.
Then he said:
“Meet me at the children’s hospital wing.”
The Hart Foundation had funded a new cardiac center scheduled to open the following week.
Construction remained unfinished.
Julian had access through a private tunnel.
“If you bring police, the building burns.”
“Are children inside?”
“Not yet.”
“Workers?”
“Two guards.”
I looked toward Officer Brooks.
She wrote one word.
STALL.
“What do you want?”
“The original card.”
“Lily’s shares transferred to me.”
“A statement saying you planted the brooch.”
I almost laughed.
Even at the edge of collapse, Julian wanted the story restored.
He did not want innocence.
He wanted authority over what people believed.
“Send proof the guards are alive.”
A video arrived.
The guards were tied inside a supply room.
Behind Julian stood oxygen tanks and construction chemicals.
He had created enough danger to force attention.

What he did not know was that Samuel Ruiz had designed the hospital security system.
There were routes Julian had never seen.
