Chapter 15 - ELEANOR WITHOUT THE BALLROOM

Eleanor was arrested at Hart Manor before sunrise.
She wore a silk robe and pearls.
She asked for ten minutes to dress.
Officer Brooks refused.
For the first time, Eleanor entered public view without choosing the lighting.
Her attorneys requested house arrest.
The court denied it after reviewing witness threats and the doll sent to Lily.
She was held without bail.
During questioning, Eleanor blamed Julian.
He had become reckless.
Emotional.
Desperate for approval.
She admitted financial misconduct but denied Daniel’s murder.
The recordings contradicted her.
She claimed her statements had been misunderstood.
The car was intended to frighten him.
The foundation transfers were temporary.
The custody file protected Lily.
The planted brooch tested my stability.
Every crime became a misunderstood form of protection.
Naomi told me Eleanor wanted a private meeting.
I agreed only after investigators approved.
We sat across from each other inside a secure interview room.
No ballroom.
No board members.
No photographers.
Just two women and a metal table.
Eleanor looked smaller.
Not harmless.
Smaller.
“You have won,” she said.
“This was never a game.”
“Everything involving power is a game.”
“That belief killed your son.”
Her face changed.
“You think Daniel was innocent?”
“I think he was trying to correct what your family built.”
“He would have destroyed the company.”
“He wanted to return stolen money.”
“Companies survive by controlling timing.”
“People died while you controlled timing.”
She looked toward the observation window.
“Lily will hate you when she understands what you cost her.”
“She will inherit less money.”
“She will inherit the truth.”
“Truth does not maintain estates.”
“No.”
“People do.”
Eleanor leaned closer.
“Do you believe Daniel loved you more than he loved the company?”
“Yes.”
“You are naive.”
“He left the evidence with our daughter.”
“He left it with someone you did not think important enough to search properly.”
That landed.
Eleanor had searched vaults, legal files, computers, and expensive objects.
The card survived inside a child’s pendant.
She looked away.
“I made that family.”
“You controlled it.”
“There is a difference.”
“Not to me.”
I stood.
Eleanor spoke before I reached the door.
“Did Lily really see Julian with the jacket?”
“Yes.”
“And you believed her immediately?”
“Yes.”
Her expression became almost curious.
“My sons never believed anything without asking me first.”
May you like
“That is why Daniel needed recordings.”
I left her alone at the table.
