Chapter 16 - THE TRIAL OF THE HART FAMILY
The criminal trial began eleven months later.
Julian and Eleanor were tried separately.
Julian’s case came first.
The prosecution showed the ballroom video.
His slap.
My kick.
The torn pocket.
The brooch.
The hidden compartment.
Then Ava’s reflected footage showed him planting it.
Julian’s attorney argued he intended to expose concerns about my parenting.
The prosecutor asked:
“By framing a six-year-old for theft?”
Julian claimed he believed Lily had found the brooch earlier.
His own messages contradicted him.
Place it in the coat.
Make Evelyn react.
Get the child to Mother before police arrive.
Patrick testified about Daniel’s crash.
Cole testified about the brakes.
Claire Hale played her father’s recordings.
The hospital confrontation provided Julian’s final admission.
I did not mean for the car to go over the edge.
The jury heard Daniel’s voice from the archive.
“If something happens to me, do not let them describe control as family duty.”
Lily did not testify in person.
She gave a recorded statement inside a child-advocacy center.
She wore a yellow sweater and held Bunny.
The repaired ear was uneven.
“What happened at the gala?” the interviewer asked.
“Uncle Julian said I stole Grandma’s pin.”
“Did you?”
“No.”
“Why did you say you saw him with your jacket?”
“Because I did.”
“Were you afraid adults would not believe you?”
“Yes.”
“Who believed you first?”
“Mom.”
“What do you want adults to know?”
Lily thought carefully.
“Children can see things even when grown-ups are wearing fancy clothes.”
The recording ended.
Several jurors looked toward Julian.
He lowered his eyes.
The jury convicted him of murder, conspiracy, fraud, child endangerment, evidence tampering, attempted kidnapping, and witness intimidation.
He received life imprisonment.
Eleanor’s trial focused on command.
She did not cut the brake line.
She did not plant the brooch.
She did not enter Robert Hale’s house.
She created the structure.
Money.
Threats.
Orders.
Cover stories.
Her attorney described Julian as an adult son acting independently.
The prosecution played her voice.
It was intended to stop him.
They played the conversation about custody.
Evelyn will react.
Then the judge will see what grief made her.
They played the gala footage showing Eleanor holding the cloakroom door.
The jury convicted her on every major charge.
Eleanor received forty-eight years.
At sentencing, she looked at me.
“You have turned Lily against her blood.”
I answered during my victim statement.
