Chapter 1 - THE BROOCH IN LILY’S POCKET

The ballroom went silent after my heel struck Julian in the chest.

He stumbled backward into a table covered with champagne glasses.

Crystal shattered across the marble floor.

Julian clutched his chest and shouted for security as though I had attacked him without warning.

He conveniently forgot the part where he had slapped me first.

He forgot the red mark burning across my cheek.

He forgot that he had stepped toward my six-year-old daughter with one hand raised.

I moved in front of Lily.

She wrapped both arms around my waist.

“Mom, I didn’t take anything.”

“I know.”

Julian pointed toward us.

“She stole the Hart Diamond.”

“You raised a thief, Evelyn.”

“Check her pockets.”

Lily began shaking.

Eleanor Hart, my mother-in-law, stood beside the charity-gala stage in a silver gown.

She looked less concerned about her granddaughter than about the hundreds of donors watching.

“Everyone needs to calm down,” she said.

“This is a private family matter.”

Julian laughed bitterly.

“Private?”

“That brooch is worth four million dollars.”

“It belonged to my grandmother.”

“It belongs to the Hart family.”

Lily pressed her face into my dress.

I looked at Eleanor.

“She is part of the Hart family.”

Eleanor’s expression hardened.

“Not in the way you seem to believe.”

The words were quiet.

They were meant only for me.

Security guards entered the ballroom.

Their director, Samuel Ruiz, stopped when he saw the bruise on my face.

He had worked for the Hart Foundation since before I married Daniel.

“What happened?” he asked.

Julian answered immediately.

“The child stole the Hart Diamond.”

“Evelyn became violent when I confronted her.”

“He struck my mother,” Lily whispered.

Julian turned toward her.

“Stop lying.”

I stepped forward.

“Speak to her like that again and the next thing you feel will not be my shoe.”

Eleanor moved between us.

“Enough.”

“Samuel, search the child.”

“No,” I said.

Every face turned toward me.

I knelt beside Lily.

“No one touches you without permission.”

“We will check your pockets together.”

Her lower lip trembled.

“I don’t have it.”

“I believe you.”

I helped her remove the small white jacket she had worn over her flowered dress.

The first pocket was empty.

The second contained a folded tissue and two peppermint candies.

Then I felt something heavy inside the lining.

The pocket had been cut from the inside.

My fingers closed around cold metal.

I pulled out the Hart Diamond.

The brooch caught the chandelier light.

A circle of old diamonds surrounded a deep blue sapphire.

Gasps moved through the ballroom.

Julian smiled.

“There.”

“Proof.”

Lily stared at the brooch.

“I never saw that.”

Julian looked toward the donors.

“A six-year-old thief and a mother willing to assault anyone who discovers the truth.”

Eleanor touched his arm.

“Do not make this worse.”

I examined the jacket.

The torn lining had clean edges.

Someone had used a blade.

“Lily cannot reach the inner seam,” I said.

Julian rolled his eyes.

“Of course you would say that.”

“She wore this jacket for ten minutes.”

“It remained in the cloakroom before the gala.”

Samuel looked toward the ballroom entrance.

“Who collected it?”

A young attendant raised one shaking hand.

“I did.”

“Who had access?”

“Guests with claim tickets.”

“And members of the Hart family,” Julian added.

I looked at him.

A faint line of pale dust marked the sleeve of his black tuxedo.

The same white powder covered the inside of Lily’s pocket.

Tailor’s chalk.

Julian noticed me looking.

He brushed his sleeve quickly.

Samuel saw it too.

“Mr. Hart, where were you before the brooch was reported missing?”

Julian’s smile disappeared.

Eleanor spoke before he could answer.

“We are not turning my gala into an interrogation.”

I looked at the brooch inside my hand.

Something felt strange beneath the central sapphire.

A tiny hinge.

Almost invisible.

Daniel had once told me the Hart Diamond held a family secret.

I thought he meant sentimental history.

Now I realized he may have meant something else.

Lily tugged my dress.

“Mommy.”

“What is it?”

May you like

She pointed toward Julian.

“I saw him with my jacket.”
