Chapter 3 - The Document Amelia Signed

Amelia was taken to a private hospital under police protection.

Ethan refused to leave.

Lily arrived after midnight with Dr. Hayes.

The moment Amelia saw her daughter, the room went silent.

Lily stood in the doorway.

Amelia covered her mouth.

“My baby.”

Lily looked at Ethan.

“Is that really Mommy?”

“Yes.”

Amelia held out her arms.

Lily ran.

No hesitation.

No fear.

She climbed onto the bed and buried her face against Amelia’s chest.

Amelia cried so hard the monitors began alarming.

A nurse rushed in.

Dr. Hayes assured her the readings were emotional, not dangerous.

Ethan stood beside them and felt something inside him begin to repair.

Not heal.

Not yet.

But repair.

An hour later, Lily slept curled against Amelia’s side.

Detective Collins arrived with Rebecca Shaw, Blackwood Holdings’ chief legal counsel.

Rebecca carried a thick folder.

“We found the document Victor mentioned.”

Ethan’s expression hardened.

“Show me.”

Seven years earlier, Amelia had signed an emergency custody and identity transfer document.

It stated that her newborn daughter had died from complications caused by the hospital fire.

It also authorized the hospital to release the remains without family viewing because of severe fire damage.

Ethan stared at the signature.

“Why would you sign this?”

Amelia opened her eyes.

“I didn’t know what it said.”

Victor had come to her hours after the fire.

She was heavily sedated.

Burned.

Confused.

He told her Ethan was dead.

He told her Lily had survived but needed emergency surgery.

He said the hospital required signatures immediately.

“I believed him.”

Amelia looked at Ethan.

“I thought I was saving her.”

Rebecca turned another page.

“There’s more.”

A second document created a private guardianship arrangement.

A child listed as Lila Hart had been placed temporarily under Nora’s care.

That child’s birth date matched Lily’s.

Amelia’s signature appeared there too.

Victor had created a legal ghost.

Lily Blackwood died on paper.

Lila Hart lived under Nora’s custody.

Ethan looked toward his sleeping daughter.

“How did no one catch this?”

Rebecca answered carefully.

“Because someone altered the hospital records.”

“And because Victor controlled the Blackwood Foundation, which owned the medical network.”

Amelia whispered:

“He told me Ethan died.”

Ethan looked at her.

“For how long?”

“Two years.”

He stopped breathing.

“What happened after you learned I was alive?”

Amelia’s eyes filled.

“I tried to escape.”

She had stolen a nurse’s phone.

Searched Ethan’s name.

Found photographs of him attending Blackwood events.

Alive.

Victor caught her before she could call.

After that, he moved her underground.

No windows.

No internet.

No staff who knew her real name.

“And Lily?”

“They brought her once a year.”

Ethan stared at Nora’s confession transcript.

“Why?”

“To keep me obedient.”

Amelia stroked Lily’s curls.

“If I caused trouble, Victor threatened her.”

“If I refused medication, he threatened you.”

Ethan closed his eyes.

Seven years.

Victor had used love as a cage.

Rebecca placed another document on the table.

“The board vote is still scheduled for nine tomorrow morning.”

“Cancel it.”

“We can’t.”

Ethan looked at her sharply.

“Why not?”

“Because Victor submitted an emergency succession motion yesterday.”

“If you fail to appear, the board can declare you incapacitated.”

“And transfer executive authority.”

“To whom?”

Rebecca’s face tightened.

“To Victor.”

Ethan looked toward the window.

Victor was in police custody.

That should have ended it.

Then Rebecca said:

“Except Victor appointed a proxy.”

“Who?”

She turned the page.

Ethan recognized the signature.

May you like

Dr. Samuel Hayes.
