Chapter 18 - Nora’s Choice

Nora accepted a plea agreement.
She admitted kidnapping-related offenses.
Identity fraud.
Conspiracy.
Evidence tampering.
And participation in Ethan’s attempted poisoning.
Her cooperation reduced the likely sentence.
It did not erase it.
Before the hearing, Nora asked to see Ethan.
He almost refused.
Amelia said:
“Go.”
“Why?”
“Because Lily will ask one day.”
“You need the answer.”
Nora sat behind thick glass.
She looked older than she had one week earlier.
“Is Lily okay?”
“Yes.”
“She asks about you.”
Nora closed her eyes.
“That makes it worse.”
Ethan picked up the phone.
“Did you love her?”
Nora began crying.
“Yes.”
“Then explain the tea.”
“I can’t.”
“Try.”
Victor told Nora that if Ethan survived the board vote, he would expose her role in Lily’s kidnapping.
Nora believed prison meant never seeing her own son again.
Victor promised money.
Protection.
A new identity.
All she had to do was poison Ethan.
“So you chose yourself.”
Nora nodded.
“Yes.”
“Even knowing what would happen to Lily.”
Nora looked broken.
“Yes.”
There was no good explanation.
Only truth.
Then she told Ethan something Lily deserved to know someday.
“For seven years, I was the only mother she remembered.”
“I fed her.”
“Held her when she was sick.”
“Taught her to read.”
“Made birthday cakes.”
“And every day, I also lied to her.”
Nora wiped her eyes.
“Love does not cancel what I did.”
Ethan sat quietly.
That sentence mattered.
“Why bring her into my house two years ago?”
Nora answered.
“Because she kept asking about the man in Amelia’s locket.”
Ethan froze.
“What man?”
“Amelia had a photograph of you.”
“Lily found it.”
“She said you looked like her.”
“Victor became afraid.”
“He wanted to test whether you would recognize her.”
“So he placed Nora in my household.”
“Yes.”
Lily’s strange familiarity with Ethan had not been imagined.
She had seen his face before.
In photographs.
In dreams built from Amelia’s stories.
Before Ethan left, Nora handed the guard an envelope.
“For Lily.”
He took it.
At home, Ethan and Amelia read it first.
Nora wrote:
Lily,
I love you.
I also hurt you.
Both are true.
You do not have to forgive me to remember the good days.
You do not have to hate me to know I was wrong.
Your mother is Amelia.
Your father is Ethan.
You belong with them.
I am sorry I made you believe you belonged to no one.
Nora.
Ethan folded the letter.
Amelia cried.
They did not give it to Lily yet.
She was seven.
There would be time.
That evening, a package arrived from police evidence storage.
Inside were items recovered from Amelia’s locked room.
A hairbrush.
A paperback novel.
A cracked wedding ring.
And a small notebook.
Amelia opened it.
For seven years, she had written one line every night.
Day 1.
Lily is alive.
Day 294.
Ethan may be alive.
Day 812.
I will see them again.
Day 1,947.
Don’t believe Victor.
Day 2,555.
If Lily remembers me, it was worth surviving.
The last entry was written the night before Ethan found her.
Day 2,557.
Tomorrow Victor says Ethan dies.
If he does, I will stop being afraid.
Amelia closed the book.
Ethan took her hand.
She looked at him.
“I was going to kill Victor.”
Ethan said nothing.
“I had hidden a piece of metal beneath the mattress.”
“If he came back after you died…”
“I was going to use it.”
Ethan held her tighter.
“You don’t have to survive alone anymore.”
Amelia leaned against him.
“I know.”
May you like
For the first time, she believed it.
