Chapter 11 - Claire Mason
Samuel nearly collapsed.
“My lake house?”
Sarah showed him the photograph.
Claire Mason was sixty-two now.
Gray hair.
Thin face.
Alive.
She had been found inside a locked cottage on property Samuel rarely visited.
Ethan stared at him.
“You expect me to believe you knew nothing?”
Samuel shook his head desperately.
“I haven’t used that house in three years.”
“Who has access?”
“My late wife did.”
“My property manager.”
“Victor visited once.”
Sarah ordered Samuel separated from Ethan until investigators established facts.
It hurt.
But Ethan had learned enough about trust to stop confusing history with proof.
Claire was transported to a secure hospital.
She asked for Ethan.
When he entered, she began crying.
“You look like your father.”
Ethan sat.
“You saved Lily.”
Claire nodded.
“I tried.”
“Tell me everything.”
The night of the fire, Claire found Lily alive in a bassinet inside a smoke-filled side room.
Amelia had already been taken downstairs by Victor’s men.
Claire carried Lily out through a service stairwell.
Victor intercepted her outside.
He claimed Ethan had died.
He said the baby was in danger.
Claire believed him for less than an hour.
Then she saw Victor bribing a hospital administrator.
She understood.
She hid Lily with Nora because Nora was Claire’s cousin.
Nora promised to protect her.
Claire then went back for Amelia.
She managed to tell Amelia Lily survived.
Before Claire could reach police, Thomas found her.
“He told me they would kill Lily if I talked.”
“What did he do to you?”
“Moved me.”
“Different houses.”
“Different names.”
“Sometimes I escaped.”
“Sometimes they found me.”
Ethan felt sick.
“Why Samuel’s lake house?”
Claire looked confused.
“I didn’t know it was his.”
She had been placed there nine months earlier by a man named Peter Hayes.
Samuel’s younger brother.
Ethan remembered Peter vaguely.
He managed medical real estate.
Rarely attended family events.
Sarah immediately searched him.
Peter Hayes had received multiple payments from Blackwood shell companies.
Samuel’s wife Rachel had not inherited $150,000.
Peter transferred it to her account.
Then told her it came from family property proceeds.
Samuel may genuinely have known nothing.
Claire continued.
“Peter handled the medications at Amelia’s facility.”
Ethan’s stomach dropped.
Peter Hayes had helped Victor maintain Amelia’s captivity.
Sarah issued an arrest warrant.
But Peter was already gone.
His phone last pinged near Blackwood Tower.
Rebecca called seconds later.
“Ethan.”
“What?”
“We have a problem.”
“Another one?”
“Peter Hayes entered the executive level fifteen minutes ago.”
“Why?”
“He used Samuel’s credentials.”
Ethan looked through the glass at Samuel sitting with an officer.
Peter had framed his own brother.
Then Rebecca said:
“He accessed the family trust archive.”
Ethan stood.
“What does that contain?”
“Original succession documents.”
“Lily’s inheritance records.”
“And Amelia’s ownership shares.”
Ethan’s heart started racing.
“Stop him.”
“We’re trying.”
Rebecca paused.
“But he already opened one file.”
“Which?”
The answer made Amelia close her eyes.
