Chapter 2 - The Woman in the Elevator

The facility went into lockdown.

Police sealed every exit.

Security teams searched floor by floor.

Ethan stood inside Room 14 holding Amelia’s bracelet.

Her name was printed beneath a patient number that did not exist in any public database.

AMELIA B.

No surname.

No history.

No family contact.

Seven years reduced to two words and a locked door.

Detective Collins entered.

“We found fresh tire tracks at the loading bay.”

Ethan looked up.

“He left?”

“Maybe.”

“But one vehicle is still inside the underground garage.”

Marcus checked the security map.

“There’s a freight elevator from this wing directly to the garage.”

They ran again.

Halfway down the stairwell, an alarm sounded.

The freight elevator was moving.

Down.

Marcus spoke into his radio.

“Garage team, cover elevator three.”

A voice answered.

“Copy.”

Then gunfire cracked through the radio.

Not close.

Downstairs.

Ethan’s blood went cold.

Sarah drew her weapon.

“Stay behind me.”

They reached the garage seconds later.

A black SUV had crashed into a concrete column.

One security officer lay behind a parked sedan with a wounded shoulder.

Two police officers had Victor pinned behind the SUV.

But Amelia was nowhere in sight.

Then Ethan heard a sound.

A woman crying.

Softly.

From inside the freight elevator.

He ran toward it.

Sarah shouted his name.

The doors opened.

Amelia was on the floor.

Barefoot.

Thin.

Dressed in a gray hospital gown.

Her wrists were bruised from restraints.

Her face was scarred along one cheek.

But she was alive.

Ethan dropped to his knees.

“Amelia.”

Her eyes opened slowly.

For several seconds, she stared at him without recognition.

Then her lips trembled.

“Ethan?”

He broke.

Every controlled breath.

Every year of pretending he had survived.

Gone.

He pulled her carefully against him.

She touched his face as if checking whether he was real.

“You got older.”

He laughed through tears.

“So did you.”

Her body shook.

“Lily?”

“She’s alive.”

Amelia closed her eyes.

A sound escaped her that Ethan would remember forever.

Half sob.

Half prayer.

“Where?”

“At home.”

“She called me Daddy.”

Amelia smiled.

Then fear returned.

“Victor.”

Ethan looked toward the SUV.

Police were pulling Victor out from behind it.

His hands were raised.

His expensive suit was torn at the shoulder.

His face remained strangely calm.

He saw Ethan holding Amelia.

Then smiled.

“You should ask her why she stayed hidden.”

Ethan stared at him.

Sarah moved toward Victor.

“Hands behind your back.”

Victor obeyed.

But his smile remained.

Amelia gripped Ethan’s arm.

“No.”

“What?”

“He wants you angry at me.”

“Why?”

She looked at Victor.

Then back at Ethan.

“Because I signed something.”

Ethan’s stomach tightened.

“What did you sign?”

Amelia began crying.

“I signed away Lily.”

Victor laughed from across the garage.

Sarah shoved him toward the police vehicle.

“Keep talking and I’ll add obstruction to the list.”

He glanced over his shoulder.

“You’ll understand tomorrow.”

Ethan stood slowly.

“What happens tomorrow?”

Victor smiled.

“The board vote.”

Then he added:

May you like

“And according to the documents Amelia signed seven years ago, Lily Blackwood legally died in that hospital.”
