Chapter 16 - The Red Folder

Elaine was searched before entering.

No weapons.

No electronics.

Only the folder.

She sat in Ethan’s study with Sarah, Marcus, Amelia, and Claire present.

“I knew Thomas was corrupt.”

Ethan stared at her.

“How long?”

“Four years.”

“And you said nothing?”

“I was collecting evidence.”

Claire laughed bitterly.

“Everyone in this family collects evidence while children suffer.”

Elaine flinched.

She deserved to.

Then she opened the folder.

The documents concerned Amelia’s father.

Richard Hart.

Before his death, Richard had secretly invested in Blackwood Holdings.

His shares passed to Amelia.

Ethan knew she owned stock.

He did not know the amount.

Elaine pointed to the original certificate.

“Eleven percent.”

Ethan stared.

“That’s impossible.”

“Victor hid the full amount.”

Amelia frowned.

“My father told me it was two percent.”

“It was eleven.”

Combined with Lily’s trust shares and Ethan’s holdings, Amelia and Lily controlled enough votes to remove Victor permanently.

That was why both had to remain alive but legally invisible.

If killed, their estates could trigger probate and expose the shares.

If kept alive under false identities, Thomas and Victor could continue voting them through forged proxies.

Ethan finally understood.

Death would have created paperwork.

Captivity created silence.

Amelia whispered:

“They kept us alive because dead people leave records.”

Elaine nodded.

“Exactly.”

The cruelty of it was almost mathematical.

Then Elaine produced voting statements.

Thomas had used Amelia’s shares in seven board elections.

He had made himself indispensable.

Victor believed he would inherit the company.

Thomas intended eventually to remove Victor too.

Ethan looked at Elaine.

“Why bring this now?”

“Because Thomas offered me immunity if I helped him escape.”

Sarah leaned forward.

“When?”

“Yesterday.”

“He has an offshore aircraft waiting.”

“Where?”

Elaine gave the location.

A private airstrip outside the state.

Police moved immediately.

Thomas was already in custody.

But Elaine believed he had arranged escape assistance from detention.

Sarah made calls.

Within twenty minutes, officers discovered a bribed transport contractor.

Thomas had planned to disappear during a medical transfer.

The plan collapsed.

Then Ethan looked at Elaine.

“You still haven’t answered the nurse.”

“What nurse?”

“The one who tried to drug Claire.”

Elaine’s face changed.

Only slightly.

Claire saw it.

“That was you.”

Elaine stood.

Marcus blocked the door.

Elaine shook her head.

“No.”

Sarah reached for the red folder.

Something fell from inside.

A Blackwood Foundation pin.

The same kind Claire described.

Elaine looked at it.

Then laughed softly.

“Thomas said you would never know which one of us was loyal.”

Ethan stared.

“To whom?”

Elaine looked directly at him.

“Not Thomas.”

“Not Victor.”

“To the company.”

Sarah’s expression hardened.

“What does that mean?”

Elaine answered calmly.

“It means some of us understood that the Blackwood family itself was the problem.”

She had been building a third faction.

If Ethan died.

Victor fell.

Thomas was arrested.

Amelia remained legally dead.

Then the board could force the family trust into external administration.

Blackwood Holdings would effectively cease being controlled by the Blackwoods.

Elaine believed that was salvation.

“You were willing to kill Claire?”

“She was reopening old liabilities.”

Ethan stepped forward.

“And Lily?”

Elaine did not answer.

That silence was enough.

Sarah arrested her.

As officers led Elaine away, she turned back.

“You think this ends because you found your daughter?”

“No.”

“You just inherited seven years of enemies.”

Ethan looked at Amelia and Lily’s drawings on the desk.

“Then they can learn something.”

Elaine paused.

“What?”

May you like

“I’m done fighting alone.”
