Chapter 17 - The Blackwood Vote

One week later, the board reconvened.

This time, there were no hidden doors.

No poisoned tea.

No forged proxy.

Police officers waited outside.

Independent counsel supervised.

Ethan entered with Amelia beside him.

Lily was not present.

Ethan refused to turn his daughter into corporate theater.

Her DNA report and legal identity records were enough.

Rebecca opened the meeting.

Victor’s board rights were suspended.

Thomas’s seat was terminated.

Elaine’s seat was suspended pending criminal proceedings.

Charles Monroe resigned.

Four seats became vacant.

Then Amelia spoke.

Her voice shook at first.

She had not addressed a room like this in seven years.

“My name is Amelia Blackwood.”

Several directors looked down.

Shame.

Fear.

Maybe both.

“I was declared dead while people in this company used my shares.”

“I was imprisoned while men around this table signed annual certifications.”

“Some of you knew nothing.”

“Some of you chose not to ask.”

She paused.

“That distinction matters.”

Ethan watched her grow stronger with every sentence.

Amelia formally reclaimed her voting shares.

Lily’s shares were placed under independent fiduciary protection until adulthood.

Not Ethan’s direct control.

Not Amelia’s.

A neutral trust institution.

Ethan had suggested it.

He wanted no one to ever claim Lily existed as a corporate instrument.

Then came the chairman vote.

Ethan was expected to nominate himself.

He did not.

He nominated Rebecca Shaw as interim independent chair.

The room erupted.

Rebecca stared at him.

“You didn’t tell me.”

“I knew you’d say no.”

“I may still.”

Amelia smiled.

“Please say yes.”

Rebecca accepted reluctantly.

Ethan remained CEO.

But governance changed.

No family succession without independent review.

No medical authority controlled by corporate leadership.

No trusts managed by a single relative.

No private medical facilities.

No hidden voting proxies.

The Blackwood empire that Victor tried to steal became harder for any Blackwood to control alone.

After the vote, Ethan walked outside.

Reporters crowded the steps.

“Mr. Blackwood, is the child really your daughter?”

“Will she inherit the company?”

“Is Amelia Blackwood mentally competent?”

“Will you sue the hospital?”

Ethan stopped.

He turned toward the cameras.

“My daughter’s name is Lily.”

“She is seven years old.”

“She is not a succession plan.”

“She is not an asset.”

“She is not a headline.”

“She is my child.”

Then he walked away.

That night, Lily was waiting in the mansion kitchen wearing yellow pajamas.

Again.

Ethan smiled.

She pointed toward the table.

A cup of tea sat there.

Ethan froze.

Lily burst out laughing.

“It’s apple juice.”

Amelia laughed from behind her.

Ethan stared at both of them.

“That is not funny.”

“It’s a little funny,” Amelia said.

He sat down.

Lily climbed onto the chair beside him.

Then her smile faded.

“Daddy?”

“Yes?”

“Is Uncle Victor going to jail?”

“Yes.”

“Forever?”

“I don’t know.”

She looked at her hands.

“Can Aunt Nora come home?”

Ethan looked at Amelia.

The hardest questions were no longer corporate.

They were seven years old.

May you like

And there was still one truth about Nora they had not told Lily.
