Chapter 15 - What Amelia Started
Ethan did not believe Claire.
Not at first.
Then Amelia came downstairs.
She saw Claire and stopped.
“You told him.”
Claire looked ashamed.
“He deserves the whole truth.”
Ethan turned toward Amelia.
“What does she mean?”
Amelia closed her eyes.
“The fire was an accident.”
She had discovered Victor searching the maternity records room.
They argued.
Victor tried to take a folder from her.
Amelia grabbed it back.
A portable warming lamp fell.
Curtains caught fire.
The sprinkler system should have activated.
It did not.
Thomas had ordered maintenance shut off water to that wing earlier.
Why?
Because Victor planned to remove Amelia and Lily that night.
The disabled safety system turned a small accidental fire into a deadly disaster.
Amelia had spent seven years believing she caused deaths.
Victor used that guilt against her.
“He told me twelve people died because of me.”
Ethan looked at Sarah’s report.
“Three people died.”
Amelia stared at him.
“What?”
“Three.”
“Victor told me twelve.”
“Why?”
Claire answered.
“To make her afraid of prosecution.”
Victor told Amelia that if she escaped, Ethan would learn she killed people.
He convinced her Ethan would hate her.
That Lily would grow up knowing her mother caused the fire.
Ethan walked toward Amelia.
“You believed I would hate you?”
Tears filled her eyes.
“After seven years of hearing it…”
“I stopped knowing what was real.”
He took her hand.
“You didn’t disable the sprinklers.”
“You didn’t arrange the kidnapping.”
“You didn’t falsify death records.”
“You knocked over a lamp while trying to protect our child.”
Amelia began sobbing.
For seven years, guilt had been another lock on the door.
Claire gave Sarah a signed statement.
She also provided a copy of the original maintenance log.
Thomas ordered the sprinkler shutdown.
Charles approved it.
Victor scheduled the transfer.
The conspiracy became almost impossible to deny.
Then Claire revealed why she left the hospital.
“Someone tried to kill me this morning.”
Ethan’s expression hardened.
“Who?”
“A nurse brought medication.”
“I recognized Peter Hayes’s handwriting on the label.”
Sarah checked.
The medication contained a dangerous sedative dose.
Peter was already in custody.
Which meant someone else still worked for Thomas.
Claire remembered one detail.
The nurse wore a Blackwood Foundation pin.
Only senior foundation staff had those.
Ethan thought immediately of one person.
Elaine Mercer.
Board director.
Foundation president.
The woman who had looked shocked during the meeting.
The woman who had visited Amelia’s funeral every year.
Sarah pulled Elaine’s records.
Her name appeared nowhere in Victor’s ledger.
That made her suspicious now.
Too clean.
Then Marcus entered.
“Sir.”
“Mrs. Mercer is at the gate.”
Ethan stared at him.
“What does she want?”
“She says she has evidence against Thomas.”
Sarah raised an eyebrow.
Claire whispered:
“Don’t let her inside.”
Elaine appeared on the monitor.
Calm.
Holding a red folder.
Then she looked directly into the camera.
“I know you’re watching, Ethan.”
She raised the folder.
