Chapter 4 - THE CUSTODY PAPERS IN DANIEL’S CAR
Police searched Daniel’s car under an emergency warrant.
Inside the locked glove compartment, they found a folder.
The first document was a divorce petition.
Daniel had signed it three days earlier.
The second was a request for temporary custody of Lucy.
It accused Nora of emotional instability.
It described her as jealous, violent, and unable to behave appropriately at corporate events.
The petition referenced the gala before the gala had happened.
Nora read the paragraph twice.
Public outburst anticipated at Hale Meridian Winter Benefit.
They had planned to provoke her.
Celeste would create the spill.
She would strike Lucy.
Nora would react.
Daniel would restrain her.
Then witnesses would remember Nora pushing Celeste.
If the cameras disappeared, Daniel could present his wife as the aggressor.
The third document requested that Lucy be placed temporarily with Daniel’s mother in Switzerland.
The flight had been booked for the following morning.
Nora’s hand began shaking.
“He was going to take her out of the country.”
Charles looked at the attorney standing beside him.
“Freeze the child’s passport.”
“It has already been flagged.”
Daniel’s folder contained another item.
A psychiatric evaluation signed by Dr. Preston Vale.
Nora had never met him.
The report stated she suffered from paranoid delusions involving Daniel and Celeste.
It claimed she had threatened self-harm.
None of it was true.
Charles examined the doctor’s name.
“Vale sits on Hale Meridian’s medical advisory board.”
Nora looked at him.
“Daniel controls that board.”
“Not anymore.”
Charles made one call.
Before midnight, the Whitmore Trust suspended Daniel’s corporate authority pending investigation.
Access to executive accounts was frozen.
Company devices were secured.
Daniel learned about the suspension while police questioned him in the ballroom.
He called Nora from a borrowed phone.
She rejected the call.
He called again.
Charles answered.
“You cannot remove me from my company,” Daniel said.
Charles’s reply was calm.
“Hale Meridian is not your company.”
“I built it.”
“You managed it.”
“I own thirty percent.”
“You own options that become void after fraud or felony conduct.”
Daniel became silent.
Charles continued.
“Nora owns fifty-one percent through the Whitmore Legacy Trust.”
“She never exercised control because she wanted your marriage to remain a partnership.”
Daniel laughed.
“Nora knows nothing about running Hale Meridian.”
From the hospital bed, Nora heard every word.
She took the phone from her father.
“I designed the logistics system you still use.”
Daniel’s breathing changed.
Nora continued.
“I negotiated the first three hospital contracts.”
“I rewrote the expansion plan after your original model failed.”
“You put your name on the company because I thought we were building a family.”
“You were never carrying me.”
“We were standing beside each other.”
Daniel’s voice became colder.
“If you take the company from me, I will make sure you lose Lucy.”
