Chapter 18 - THE HOUSE NORA CHOSE

Nora sold the mansion she had shared with Daniel.
Lucy did not want to return to the hallway where Celeste had threatened her.
Nora did not want to sleep in rooms built from excuses.
They moved into a smaller house near Lucy’s school.
The kitchen opened into the living room.
The front steps were crooked.
The backyard had an old maple tree.
Lucy loved it immediately.
She chose yellow walls for her bedroom.
Charles offered to renovate the entire property.
Nora allowed him to repair the roof.
Nothing more.
She wanted a home that grew slowly.
Lucy kept her missing tooth inside a small wooden box.
The tooth fairy had left a silver dollar and a note.
BRAVE GIRLS ARE ALLOWED TO CRY.
Lucy asked whether Grandpa had written it.
Charles denied everything with great dignity.
Nora knew his handwriting.
At school, Lucy became nervous whenever adults raised their voices.
She attended therapy.
She learned that the body could remember danger even when the mind wanted to move forward.
Nora attended therapy too.
She learned how often she had reduced herself to keep Daniel comfortable.
Healing did not look like a dramatic transformation.
It looked like ordinary choices.
