Chapter 15 - THE CRIMINAL TRIAL
Daniel and Celeste were tried separately.
Celeste pleaded guilty to assault, conspiracy, and falsifying records.
Her testimony became central to Daniel’s trial.
The ballroom recording played again.
Lucy did not attend.
Nora watched every second.
Daniel’s attorney argued that Celeste had acted independently.
Then prosecutors played Daniel’s voice.
“Lucy cries easily.”
“If you scare her, Nora will react before she thinks.”
They displayed the timed schedule.
They showed the psychiatric reports.
They traced the payments to Dr. Vale.
They introduced the Switzerland reservations.
The prosecution described the plan clearly.
Provoke the mother.
Discredit her publicly.
Use the father’s control of the narrative.
Remove the child.
Force a divorce settlement.
Complete the merger.
Daniel looked smaller each day.
Without the ballroom, the tuxedo, and the executives waiting for his approval, he appeared like an ordinary man who had made monstrous decisions.
The jury found him guilty of conspiracy, fraud, child endangerment, assault against Nora, and attempted custodial interference.
He was not convicted because Charles Whitmore was powerful.
He was convicted because the evidence was overwhelming.
During sentencing, Daniel asked to speak.
He looked toward Nora.
“I loved you.”
She believed him.
That was the tragedy.
He continued.
“I thought everything I had built was being taken from me.”
Nora answered quietly from her seat.
“So you tried to take our daughter.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
The judge sentenced him to prison and prohibited direct contact with Lucy unless approved by a therapist and family court.
Celeste received a shorter sentence because of her cooperation.
Harrison Arden and Dr. Vale were convicted in later proceedings.
The Swiss school was closed.
