Chapter 13 - THE CUSTODY HEARING
Daniel requested temporary visitation with Lucy.
Nora opposed unsupervised contact.
The hearing drew national attention.
Daniel entered court wearing a dark suit and a carefully wounded expression.
Nora entered holding Lucy’s hand.
The judge allowed Lucy to remain in a separate room with a therapist.
She would not testify in open court.
Daniel’s attorney argued that one emotional outburst should not destroy a father-daughter relationship.
Nora’s attorney played the ballroom video.
Then she played Daniel’s threat.
“If you take the company from me, I will make sure you lose Lucy.”
Daniel claimed he had spoken in anger.
The attorney displayed the custody papers prepared before the gala.
She displayed the Swiss flight reservation.
She displayed Dr. Vale’s false medical reports.
The plan had existed before the anger.
Daniel took the stand.
“I never intended for Celeste to hit Lucy.”
“Did you intend for her to frighten Lucy?”
“I intended to expose Nora’s instability.”
“By using your daughter?”
Daniel hesitated.
The courtroom became silent.
“I believed Lucy would be safe.”
“Your daughter lost a tooth.”
“That was Celeste’s fault.”
“You stood over the bleeding child and said she deserved it.”
Daniel looked toward Nora.
“I was under pressure.”
Nora no longer felt compelled to rescue him from his own answer.
The judge denied unsupervised visitation.
Daniel was permitted written communication through a child therapist.
Lucy would decide whether to read it.
Temporary sole custody remained with Nora.
Outside the courthouse, Daniel attempted to approach them.
Security stopped him.
Lucy looked at her father from behind Nora’s coat.
He lifted one hand.
She did not wave.
