Chapter 1 - THE MAN AT THE BALLROOM DOOR

Charles Whitmore crossed the ballroom without hurrying.

That frightened Daniel more than shouting would have.

The four security guards behind Charles moved with the same controlled precision.

Guests stepped aside before anyone asked them to move.

Nora remained on the marble with Lucy in her arms.

Her shoulder throbbed where Daniel had thrown her.

Blood continued to run from Lucy’s swollen mouth.

Charles stopped beside them.

He removed his jacket and placed it around his granddaughter.

“Lucy.”

The little girl looked up.

“Grandpa.”

His voice softened.

“Can you breathe?”

She nodded.

“Does your head hurt?”

“A little.”

“Your mouth?”

Lucy touched her lip and began crying again.

“My tooth fell out.”

Charles saw the tiny white tooth beside the broken glass.

He looked at Daniel.

“What happened?”

Daniel straightened his tuxedo.

“There was an unfortunate misunderstanding.”

Charles’s gaze moved toward the dark marks forming around Nora’s wrist.

“Did the misunderstanding leave fingerprints on my daughter?”

Daniel swallowed.

“Nora attacked Celeste.”

Celeste stepped forward, holding the stained fabric away from her body.

“The child spilled juice on me.”

“Then Nora became violent.”

Charles looked at Lucy.

“Did you spill the juice?”

Lucy shook her head.

“She bumped me.”

Celeste laughed nervously.

“She is confused.”

Charles turned toward his security director.

“Seal the ballroom.”

Daniel’s face changed.

“You cannot imprison my guests.”

“I am preserving witnesses.”

“This is a private corporate event.”

Charles glanced toward the Hale Meridian emblem above the stage.

“No.”

“It is an event held inside a Whitmore-owned building by a company financed through a Whitmore-controlled trust.”

A murmur passed through the ballroom.

Daniel stared at him.

“That is not relevant.”

“It became relevant when you put your hands on Nora.”

Charles crouched beside his daughter.

“Can you stand?”

Nora tried.

Pain shot through her hip.

Charles immediately signaled to one of his men.

A physician attending the gala hurried forward.

He examined Lucy first.

“She needs an emergency dentist and a hospital evaluation.”

Charles nodded.

“Prepare the car.”

Daniel moved into their path.

“Lucy is my daughter.”

Nora pulled the child closer.

“You called her ‘that child.’”

“I was angry.”

“You said she deserved to be hit.”

Daniel looked around at the watching guests.

“You are twisting my words.”

A calm voice came from the ballroom’s sound booth.

“No, sir.”

The event technician stood behind the glass holding a headset.

“Your microphone was still live.”

May you like

Daniel slowly looked toward the stage.

Every word he had spoken had been recorded.
