Chapter 14 - NORA TAKES THE CHAIR
Nora became interim chief executive of Hale Meridian.
The appointment was expected to last six months.
On her first day, she entered Daniel’s former office.
Her own original design sketches had been stored inside a basement archive.
She hung one behind the desk.
Then she removed the wall of photographs showing Daniel alone at company milestones.
They were replaced by group photographs.
Drivers.
Nurses.
Dispatchers.
Engineers.
Hospital partners.
No company was built by one face.
Nora created an employee reporting office independent of executive leadership.
She restored the people Daniel had fired for questioning him.
She ordered a complete audit of charitable spending.
The company discovered millions had been diverted through Celeste and the Ardens.
Recovering the money would take years.
Trust would take longer.
At a staff meeting, Nora did not promise perfection.
“I stood close to Daniel and failed to see what many of you experienced.”
“Some of you tried to warn me.”
“I am sorry.”
A woman near the back raised her hand.
“Will you stay after the investigation?”
Nora looked around the room.
“I do not know.”
“I will stay long enough to rebuild a system that does not depend on one person being good.”
The sentence became the foundation of the restructuring.
Charles suggested Nora retain family control.
She transferred twenty percent of the voting rights into an employee trust instead.
Her father objected privately.
“Your grandfather built the Whitmore holdings to remain protected.”
“Protected from whom?”
“Outside interests.”
“Daniel was inside.”
Charles had no answer.
