Chapter 9 - THE MAID BECAME THE THIEF

Police came to Claire’s apartment at seven the next morning.

Not to arrest her.

To ask questions.

A diamond bracelet belonging to Vanessa had been found inside Claire’s cleaning bag.

Claire stared at the evidence photograph.

“I have never seen that bracelet.”

Vanessa claimed it disappeared the week Claire began “interfering.”

She also accused Claire of stealing prescription medication.

Of manipulating Noah.

Of becoming obsessed with the Whitman family.

Claire almost admired the symmetry.

Vanessa had spent months making Noah look unreliable.

Now she was doing the same to Claire.

Grant called immediately.

“Claire.”

“Don’t say anything without a lawyer.”

“I already have one.”

“How?”

“Emily’s union recommended someone.”

There was silence.

Then Grant said.

“I believe you.”

Claire looked at the wall.

“You didn’t believe Noah.”

The words came out harsher than she intended.

Grant accepted them.

“I know.”

“I’m trying not to make the same mistake twice.”

Claire closed her eyes.

That mattered.

Not enough.

But it mattered.

The mansion security system became critical.

The hallway outside the staff room had a camera.

Vanessa’s attorneys demanded footage.

The recording was missing.

Of course.

But Claire remembered something.

The Whitman mansion used a cloud security system because Grant traveled constantly.

There were backups.

Grant’s chief technology officer retrieved them.

The video showed Vanessa entering the staff corridor at 5:43 a.m.

Carrying something small.

She opened Claire’s cleaning bag.

Placed the object inside.

Then left.

Twenty minutes later, she called security.

Claire watched the footage in silence.

Grant did too.

Vanessa had framed her.

Exactly as she had framed Noah.

The police investigation against Claire ended almost immediately.

The investigation against Vanessa expanded.

But the recording revealed something else.

At 5:39 a.m., four minutes before planting the bracelet, Vanessa met someone at the service entrance.

A man in a dark coat.

He handed her an envelope.

Claire frowned.

“Who is that?”

Grant stared at the screen.

His face changed.

“My chief financial officer.”

Daniel Reeves.

The man who had managed Whitman Medical’s finances for eleven years.

Grant’s closest business ally.

Claire felt the room tighten.

Whatever Vanessa was doing, she had not been doing it alone.
