Chapter 16 - THE HEARING NOAH ATTENDED
The guardianship petition Vanessa filed did not disappear automatically.
Her attorney attempted to withdraw it quietly.
Grant’s counsel refused.
They wanted the record corrected.
A family court hearing reviewed how the petition had been created.
Grant testified.
Emily testified.
Claire testified.
Doctors testified.
Then Noah’s appointed child advocate asked whether he wanted to participate.
Everyone expected no.
Noah typed.
YES.
He entered the courtroom in his wheelchair.
Grant sat behind him.
Not beside.
Noah’s choice.
The judge spoke gently.
“You don’t have to answer anything you don’t want to.”
Noah nodded.
The advocate used a tablet.
“Did Vanessa help you feel safe?”
Noah pressed.
NO.
“Did she give you medicine?”
YES.
“Did you want the medicine?”
NO.
“Did she move your wheelchair near the stairs?”
Noah’s breathing changed.
The judge immediately offered to stop.
Noah shook his head.
Then the advocate asked.
“Did she push you?”
Noah stared at the screen.
His finger hovered.
Then he moved his hand away.
Claire saw frustration.
He wanted more than yes.
He wanted voice.
His mouth opened.
Nothing.
Then again.
A sound.
Barely there.
“Y…”
Grant froze.
Noah tried again.
“Yes.”
One word.
The courtroom stopped.
Grant covered his mouth.
Claire cried openly.
Noah looked at Vanessa.
Then said another word.
“Pushed.”
Vanessa’s face changed.
For the first time, there was no expression ready.
No perfect concern.
No outrage.
Only fear.
Noah continued.
“She.”
His voice cracked.
“Pushed.”
“Me.”
Three words.
That was all.
It was enough.
The judge terminated Vanessa’s guardianship petition permanently.
Ordered strict no-contact provisions.
And referred the testimony for further criminal proceedings.
Outside court, reporters shouted.
Grant carried no statement.
Claire carried nothing.
