Chapter 5 - GRANT CAME HOME EARLY

Grant arrived three hours later.
No announcement.
No driver.
No call to Vanessa.
He walked into the mansion carrying his overnight bag.
Claire saw immediately why people followed him in business.
He noticed everything when he chose to look.
The locked west-wing door.
The uneaten tray.
The wheelchair.
Noah asleep at two in the afternoon.
Grant entered his son’s room.
“Noah?”
The boy opened his eyes slowly.
Grant smiled.
“Hey, buddy.”
Noah stared at him.
For one heartbreaking second, Claire saw hope.
Then fear.
Noah looked toward the door.
Grant noticed.
“Where’s Vanessa?”
Claire answered.
“Charity luncheon.”
Grant sat beside Noah.
“You feeling okay?”
No response.
He touched Noah’s hand.
Then stopped.
The bruise on his wrist.
“What happened?”
Claire said.
“I don’t know.”
Grant looked at her.
“You’re the maid.”
Not cruel.
Just automatic.
As though explanation belonged to staff.
Claire met his eyes.
“I’m the person who stopped his chair from going down the stairs.”
Grant became still.
“What?”
He had not been told.
Of course.
Vanessa had described it as Claire forgetting the brake.
Grant stood.
“Tell me exactly what happened.”
Claire did.
No dramatics.
No accusation.
Just facts.
Noah at the top of the staircase.
Chair moving.
Manual brake ineffective.
Claire grabbing it.
Vanessa blaming her.
Grant went to the chair.
He checked the override.
Then looked toward Claire.
“This chair has automatic incline protection.”
“Yes.”
“How did it roll?”
“I think you should ask your product team.”
His face changed.
“You know about the logs?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
“Emily showed me.”
Grant said nothing for several seconds.
Then he called his chief engineer.
The answer came quickly.
Nine manual overrides.
Vanessa’s credentials.
Grant looked toward his son.
Noah’s eyes were closed again.
“Why didn’t anyone tell me?”
Claire could not stop herself.
“People tried.”
Grant looked at her.
“What does that mean?”
“Emily sends reports.”
“Staff raise concerns.”
“Vanessa answers your calls.”
“You ask if Noah is all right.”
“Then you accept the answer that lets you stay away.”
The room became silent.
Claire expected to be fired.
Grant’s jaw tightened.
Then relaxed.
“You’re right.”
That surprised her.
Before either could say more, the front door opened.
Vanessa returned.
She walked into Noah’s room.
Stopped.
Saw Grant.
Then smiled.
“Darling.”
“What a surprise.”
Grant turned toward her.
“Why did you override Noah’s wheelchair safety system yesterday?”

The smile remained.
But her eyes changed.
