Chapter 1 - THE PICTURE NOAH CHOSE

Claire pulled the picture book from the shelf and placed it across Noah’s lap.

It was an old book about animals in the forest.

Nothing expensive.

Nothing educational.

Just bright colors and simple drawings.

Noah opened it slowly.

His fingers stopped on a page showing a small rabbit hiding beneath a tree while a fox watched from behind a rock.

Claire smiled.

“You like the rabbit?”

Noah did not move.

Then he lifted one finger.

He tapped the fox.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Claire frowned.

“The fox?”

Noah looked toward the bedroom door.

Then back at the fox.

Claire felt something cold move through her chest.

“You mean someone?”

His breathing changed.

She lowered her voice.

“You don’t have to tell me.”

Noah turned the page.

There was a picture of a cliff.

The rabbit stood near the edge.

The fox was behind it.

Noah touched the rabbit.

Then himself.

Claire stopped breathing.

He touched the fox.

Then pointed toward the hallway.

Vanessa.

Claire’s hands became still.

“Noah.”

He immediately closed the book.

His eyes filled with panic.

Footsteps sounded outside.

Claire stood and pretended to straighten the curtains.

Vanessa entered.

“What are you doing?”

“Dusting.”

Vanessa’s eyes moved toward the book.

“You were reading to him?”

“I thought he might like it.”

Vanessa walked over and snatched the book from Noah’s lap.

“He gets overstimulated.”

“He was calm.”

Vanessa looked at Claire.

“I decide what calm looks like.”

Noah lowered his head.

Claire felt anger rise.

She forced it down.

Anger would get her fired.

Evidence might save him.

Vanessa placed the book on the highest shelf.

Then she wheeled Noah toward the window.

“You need rest.”

Claire watched her hand.

Vanessa’s fingers rested on the wheelchair brake.

She unlocked it.

Then locked it again.

Casually.

Almost testing.

Claire remembered the staircase.

That afternoon, she checked the wheelchair more carefully.

The chair was no ordinary model.

A small silver plate beneath the seat read.

WHITMAN MEDICAL TECHNOLOGIES.

PROTOTYPE PEDIATRIC MOBILITY SYSTEM.

Claire knew Grant’s company built advanced mobility devices.

She did not know Noah used one of their prototypes.

Near the rear wheel was a sealed control housing.

And beneath it.

A tiny status light.

Green.

Then amber.

Then green again.

Claire found the manual in Noah’s therapy cabinet.

The chair included an automatic incline brake.

If the chair approached a dangerous downward slope while unoccupied or uncontrolled, the system locked automatically.

Claire reread the sentence.

Then the next.

Manual override requires caregiver authorization.

Her hands turned cold.

The chair had not simply rolled toward the stairs because someone forgot the brake.

Someone had overridden the safety system.

And only authorized caregivers had access.

Claire checked the list taped inside the cabinet.

GRANT WHITMAN.

VANESSA WHITMAN.

DR. PETER LANG.

THERAPIST: EMILY COLE.

Claire’s name was not there.

Vanessa’s was.

That night, Claire photographed the manual.

Then she took one more picture.

The scraped mark beside the override switch.

May you like

Someone had been using it.

Frequently.
