Chapter 4 - THE WHEELCHAIR LOG

Emily accessed the clinical portal from her office.
Claire waited in the hallway.
Ten minutes later, Emily came out looking shaken.
“There were nine manual safety overrides in six weeks.”
“Nine?”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
“Location data is approximate.”
“But six happened inside the mansion.”
Claire’s chest tightened.
“The staircase?”
“One was logged at 9:14 a.m. yesterday.”
That was the exact time Noah nearly went over the stairs.
Emily printed the event code.
MANUAL INCLINE PROTECTION DISABLED.
AUTHORIZED USER: V.WHITMAN.
Claire stared.
Vanessa’s account.
Not proof she physically pushed the chair.
But proof she disabled the system.
“Can she say it was accidental?”
“Yes.”
“Nine times?”
Emily shook her head.
“No.”
They saved copies.
Three places.
Claire’s phone.
Emily’s private drive.
A sealed envelope in Emily’s clinic office.
Then Emily did something important.
She filed an internal safety escalation through Whitman Medical’s device monitoring system.
Not to Grant personally.
To product safety.
The report created a timestamp no one in the mansion could erase.
By afternoon, Grant’s engineering team had flagged the chair for urgent inspection.
Vanessa found out.
She entered Noah’s room furious.
“Who reported the chair?”
Claire was changing linens.
“I don’t know.”
Vanessa looked toward Emily.
The therapist remained calm.
“Device safety systems flag themselves.”
Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.
“That chair is private family property.”
Emily replied.
“It’s a monitored clinical prototype.”
“Safety events are automatically reviewable.”
Vanessa looked at Noah.
For one second, her mask disappeared.
Pure rage.
Noah flinched.
Claire saw.
Emily saw.
Then Vanessa smiled again.
“How unfortunate.”
She left.
That evening, Claire found Noah’s therapy tablet smashed on the floor.
Vanessa claimed he dropped it.
Noah’s hands were too weak to lift it from the desk.
Claire knew.
Emily knew.
Grant still did not.
Then product safety called the mansion.
They wanted the wheelchair returned for inspection.
Vanessa refused.
“It would distress Noah.”
The engineer insisted.
She hung up.
The next morning, Grant called unexpectedly.
Claire answered the kitchen phone.
“Whitman residence.”
“Claire?”
“Yes, Mr. Whitman.”
There was a pause.
“I was trying Vanessa.”
“She’s out.”
“With Noah?”
“No.”
Another silence.
Grant’s voice sharpened.
“Where is Noah?”
“In his room.”
“Who’s with him?”
“Me.”
Grant hesitated.
Then asked.
“Is he all right?”
Claire looked toward the west wing.
The safe answer would be yes.
The answer Vanessa always gave.
Claire chose differently.
“No.”
Grant stopped breathing.
“What do you mean, no?”
May you like
Claire held the phone tighter.
“I think you need to come home.”
