Chapter 19 - THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL

Noah returned to school at ten.
Not the private tutor room.
A real school.
Accessible classrooms.
Other children.
Noise.
Mess.
Life.
Grant was more nervous than Noah.
“Do you have your emergency card?”
Noah nodded.
“Medication list?”
Nod.
“Phone?”
Noah rolled his eyes.
Claire laughed.
“Congratulations.”
“What?”
“He’s annoyed by you.”
“That’s healthy.”
Grant smiled.
Noah’s speech had improved enough for full sentences, though he still became quiet under stress.
The first week, another child asked why he used a wheelchair.
Noah answered.
“Because walking is harder for me.”
Then returned to his lunch.
No tragedy.
No explanation.
Just fact.
Claire watched from the hallway during a scheduled advocacy meeting.
Noah saw her.
He waved.
She waved back.
She no longer worked for the Whitmans.
That boundary mattered.
Grant funded nothing in her life.
Claire earned her certification.
Her job.
Her apartment.
Her brother finished community college.
She remained part of Noah’s life because they both chose it.
Not because a paycheck required invisibility.
Later, Grant asked her to dinner.
Claire stared at him.
“With Noah?”
“No.”
The answer surprised her.
“A date?”
Grant looked almost embarrassed.
“Yes.”
Claire laughed.
“You’re my former employer.”
“I know.”
“You’re emotionally complicated.”
“Very.”
“You’re recently divorced from a convicted criminal.”
“That sounds worse out loud.”
“It should.”
Grant smiled.
Claire considered.
Then shook her head.
“Not yet.”
He nodded.
May you like
No pressure.
That answer made “not yet” feel possible instead of dangerous.
