Chapter 5 - Elena’s First Warning

I returned to the hospital as morning light entered the windows.

Mom was awake.

She looked embarrassed when she saw me.

“I should have told you sooner.”

“No.”

“I should have come home sooner.”

“You were working.”

“I was hiding inside work.”

She reached for my hand.

“Both can be true.”

Elena stood near the window.

She had been in our home for nine months.

Vanessa hired her after firing two other caregivers.

I had assumed Elena was chosen because she accepted lower pay.

The truth was different.

Mom had met Elena years earlier at a community clinic.

Elena cared for her own grandmother until the woman died.

Mom remembered her patience.

When Vanessa began refusing outside nurses, Mom contacted Elena privately.

She wanted one person in the house who had no loyalty to my wife.

Elena noticed the medication changes during her first week.

She photographed every bottle.

She documented meals.

She recorded bruises.

She tried to call me three times.

Each message reached Vanessa first because my home calls forwarded through a shared account.

Vanessa deleted them.

“She told me you knew everything,” Elena said.

“She said you did not want to be bothered.”

“Why did you stay?”

Elena looked toward Mom.

“Because leaving would have made her completely alone.”

Mom began crying.

Elena crossed the room and adjusted her blanket.

The gesture was simple.

Gentle.

Nothing about it asked to be seen.

That made Vanessa’s accusation feel even uglier.

Detective Brooks entered with the hospital toxicology report.

Mom had received repeated doses of a sedative, an anticoagulant, and a drug that could mimic cognitive decline.

Long-term use could create confusion, weakness, and memory gaps.

Vanessa had been manufacturing dementia.

The doctor also found signs of dehydration and malnutrition.

The household account showed thousands spent on restaurants and wine.

Mom had been given soup, crackers, and instant oatmeal.

I opened the security archive again.

One clip showed Elena carrying a hidden plate into Mom’s room.

Vanessa caught her.

She threw the food onto the floor.

Then she struck Elena with the wooden spoon.

Elena did not fight back.

She moved between Vanessa and the bed.

In the next clip, Charles said:

“If the maid survives this, she becomes a witness.”
