Chapter 16 - Vanessa’s Sentence
Vanessa pleaded guilty to elder abuse, fraud, identity theft, and conspiracy to commit murder.
Her testimony reduced the sentence.
It did not erase the evidence.
Before sentencing, she asked to speak.
She looked at Mom first.
“I was overwhelmed.”
Mom did not react.
Vanessa looked at Elena.
“I thought you were trying to take my place.”
Elena answered from the gallery.
“I was trying to keep her alive.”
Vanessa finally looked at me.
“You left me.”
I stood for my victim statement.
“I traveled for work.”
“I trusted you with my home.”
“You used that trust to injure my mother, steal from my company, and plan my death.”
“You were not abandoned.”
“You were unobserved.”
“That revealed who you chose to become.”
The judge sentenced her to thirty-four years.
She would be eligible for review only after serving most of it.
As deputies led her away, Vanessa turned toward Elena.
One final time, she tried to transform protection into rivalry.
“You won.”
Elena shook her head.
“This was never a competition.”
Mom squeezed Elena’s hand.
The divorce became final two months later.
I recovered most of the stolen assets.
I placed none of them back into my personal accounts.
They funded long-term care for the North Star survivors and legal assistance for families fighting fraudulent guardianships.
Mom moved into a smaller house near a rehabilitation center.
It had wide doors, sunlight, and a garden she could reach without assistance.
Elena continued caring for her during recovery.
Not as a housekeeper.
As a licensed nursing student supported by a public scholarship program Mom created for elder-care workers.
Elena had insisted the program help others too.
