Chapter 12 - My Father’s Backup

I entered through the freight tunnel wearing a police transmitter.
Detective Brooks wanted to send a tactical team first.
Charles had wired motion sensors through the control room.
A sudden entry could trigger the device.
I moved alone until I reached the basement corridor.
Nathan sat inside the glass control booth.
Charles stood behind him.
The detonator rested in his hand.
“You look tired,” Charles said through the speaker.
“You look cornered.”
“Men like me are never cornered.”
“You left Vanessa.”
“She became emotional.”
“You poisoned old people.”
“I corrected inefficient ownership.”
The language sounded polished.
That made it worse.
He saw human beings as obstacles between assets and himself.
I held up my father’s letter.
“He knew what you were.”
“He suspected.”
“He did nothing.”
“My father built backups.”
I pressed a switch hidden beneath the corridor railing.
Emergency shutters dropped around the server racks.
Charles turned.
The legacy system had begun uploading everything to government investigators.
My father designed the final backup to activate only when fire doors, security failure, and the analog switch occurred together.
Charles had created the conditions himself.
He pressed the detonator.
Nothing happened.
The device required the building network.
The emergency shutters had isolated it.
Nathan drove his chair backward into Charles.
The detonator fell.
I entered the booth.
Charles struck me with a metal tool.
We crashed against the console.
He reached for the detonator.
Nathan kicked it beneath the cabinets.
Detective Brooks’s team breached the rear door.
Charles grabbed a pistol from his ankle.
He aimed at me.
Elena’s voice came through the intercom.
“Mr. Voss.”
He looked toward the screen.
Elena stood in the security office with Mom beside her in a wheelchair.
They had been evacuated from the hospital after another threat.
Elena had connected to the building remotely.
“You forgot one camera,” she said.
The monitor showed Charles poisoning a resident at North Star.
His face appeared clearly.
His attention shifted for one second.
May you like
Police tackled him.
The man who built his life around hidden control was defeated by the people he considered invisible.
