Chapter 11 - The Dark Building

Ross Energy headquarters contained more than offices.
The basement held the legacy control center for every industrial network my father built.
Most systems had moved to newer platforms.
The old center remained connected for emergency recovery.
Charles intended to destroy the evidence and create a physical disaster.
He locked the building remotely.
More than sixty employees were inside.
Fire doors closed.
Elevators stopped.
A gas alarm activated in the basement.
I joined the police command post across the street.
The digital sensor showed a leak.
I no longer trusted digital sensors.
A maintenance technician checked the manual system.
No gas.
Another false alarm.
Charles wanted evacuation routes crowded.
He had placed an explosive device near the eastern stairwell.
My father had designed an independent analog override.
It required a key stored inside the security office.
The office was locked behind Charles’s system.
Then I remembered Elena’s words.
Gratitude is not control.
I had spent the crisis trying to command every response.
The building engineers knew the structure better than I did now.
I asked the maintenance supervisor for his plan.
He directed employees through a freight tunnel connected to an adjacent warehouse.
Police cleared the route.
Fifty-eight people escaped.
Two remained unaccounted for.
Nathan Starling.
And Charles.
Nathan had left the hospital after receiving a message claiming his son was inside.
Charles had lured him back.
Security footage returned briefly.
Nathan stood in the control room with his hands tied.
Charles held a detonator.
He addressed the camera.
“Daniel.”
“You built systems because you believed information creates control.”
“It does not.”
“Fear creates control.”
I activated the old intercom.
“My father collected evidence on you for years.”
“He died before using it.”
“And yet here you are.”
Charles smiled.
May you like
“Come inside.”
“Or Nathan dies with your company.”
