Chapter 4 - The Safe at Ross Energy

I reached company headquarters shortly before dawn.

Detective Brooks came with me.

Elena remained at the hospital with Mom.

The building had been part of my life since childhood.

My father used to bring me through the machine floor on Saturday mornings.

He taught me that every emergency system needed a backup.

Every backup needed a test.

And every person with access needed oversight.

I had followed those rules in Saudi Arabia.

I had failed to follow them inside my own marriage.

The brass key opened a narrow safe behind my father’s portrait.

Inside were financial ledgers, photographs, and a letter written five years earlier.

Daniel,

Charles Voss has approached your mother twice about transferring her voting rights.

He uses family relationships to enter companies from the inside.

He does not buy control.

He manufactures crisis and offers himself as the solution.

Do not trust anyone who encourages you to separate love from verification.

The ledgers documented Voss’s earlier operations.

A widow in Houston had been declared incompetent after her stepson’s wife controlled her medication.

A retired manufacturer in Detroit signed away a company after months of isolation.

A shipping heiress died two weeks after transferring her trust.

Charles had advised every family.

No criminal case had connected him to the outcomes.

My father had been collecting evidence.

The safe also contained a security token capable of freezing every trust-controlled vote.

I activated it.

At 5:41 a.m., the emergency board meeting was suspended.

At 5:43, Charles tried to access the voting portal.

At 5:44, the system recorded his location.

He was inside my house.

Police entered minutes later.

Charles was gone.

Vanessa claimed he left through the rear door while officers searched upstairs.

A hidden passage behind the wine cellar led to the garage.

I had installed it as an emergency exit during renovations.

Only Vanessa and I knew it existed.

She had given him the plans.

Inside the tunnel, police found a discarded phone.

One unsent message remained on the screen.

Plan failed.

Use the refinery option.

My stomach tightened.

The Saudi project I had just completed included a control system connected to Ross Energy’s domestic servers.

If Charles had access to my credentials, he could create an industrial emergency.

May you like

Not only a financial crisis.

A real one.
