Chapter 2 - The Blue Sewing Box

Elena returned from treatment with six stitches above her eyebrow.
She refused pain medication until she knew Mom was safe.
I asked about the blue sewing box.
Her face changed.
“Mrs. Ross told me not to open it unless something happened to her.”
Something had happened.
We returned to the house with Detective Lena Brooks and two uniformed officers.
Vanessa had been ordered to stay away from the hospital for the night.
She had not been arrested yet.
Her attorney claimed the kitchen incident was a misunderstanding caused by caregiver stress.
The house felt different when I entered again.
The polished floors.
The expensive furniture.
The framed wedding photographs.
Everything looked like part of a set built around a life that had never existed.
We found the sewing box beneath folded blankets in Mom’s closet.
It was blue wood with painted white flowers.
Elena opened the false bottom.
Inside were three things.
An old digital recorder.
A sealed envelope addressed to me.
And a small brass key.
The recorder contained Mom’s voice.
“Daniel, if you are hearing this, Vanessa has finally stopped pretending.”
I sat on the edge of the bed.
“She has been giving me pills that are not mine.”
“She says they are for anxiety.”
“They make me dizzy.”
“Charles Voss comes when I am weak.”
“He wants my signature on the voting trust.”
Mom explained that my father had never transferred full control of Ross Energy Systems to me.
He gave me operational authority.
Mom retained fifty-one percent of voting rights through a private trust.
The arrangement was meant to protect the company if I was pressured, blackmailed, or manipulated.
I had once considered the structure unnecessary.
My father had known people better than I did.
The sealed envelope contained the original trust summary.
If Mom died or became legally incapacitated, her voting rights would not pass directly to me.
They would enter an independent foundation unless she signed a transfer before death.
Vanessa needed her conscious enough to sign.
Afterward, she needed Mom declared incompetent or dead.
The brass key opened my father’s private safe at Ross Energy headquarters.
Detective Brooks looked at me.
“What is inside?”
“I do not know.”
Elena lowered her eyes.
“Mrs. Ross said it contained proof that Mr. Voss had tried this before.”
A car stopped outside.
Vanessa entered using her own key.
Charles Voss walked in behind her.

They had not expected police.
They had expected an empty house.
