Chapter 13 - Vanessa’s Arrest

Vanessa was formally arrested the following morning.

The charges included elder abuse, attempted fraud, conspiracy, identity theft, unlawful restraint, evidence fabrication, and participation in attempted murder.

Her attorney arranged a plea meeting.

She blamed Charles.

She blamed loneliness.

She blamed my travel.

She blamed Mom’s hostility.

She blamed Elena’s presence.

The prosecutor played the kitchen footage.

Vanessa striking Elena.

Vanessa denying Mom water.

Vanessa discussing how long Mom could survive.

There was no version of loneliness that explained those choices.

Charles refused to cooperate.

He called himself a financial innovator.

The North Star residents called him something else.

A thief.

A captor.

A murderer.

Dr. Reed pleaded guilty and testified against both of them.

Nathan received immunity for the cyber offenses committed under coercion.

He resigned from Ross Energy and entered a protection program with his son.

The company paid for the boy’s legitimate treatment without conditions.

I told the board the decision could not depend on Nathan’s loyalty.

Medical care should never have been used as leverage.

Vanessa wrote to me from jail.

She asked whether I ever loved her.

I read the question twice.

Part of me wanted to answer with every memory she had poisoned.

Instead, I gave the letter to Maya.

The divorce petition requested no private settlement.

Every account was frozen.

Every hidden transfer entered the forensic audit.

The house was placed under temporary court control.

Vanessa’s family accused me of abandoning her.

None asked about Mom’s broken wrist.

None visited Elena after her stitches.

The divorce court granted me exclusive possession of the home.

I declined.

Mom refused to return.

Elena said the kitchen made her hear the spoon striking bone.

We sold the property after the criminal trial.

The proceeds funded restitution for North Star victims.

Vanessa learned about the sale in court.

The house she had tried to steal no longer belonged to either of us.
